2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
Here is how irrelevant Virginia football is: despite playing in a major conference, almost no major offshore sportsbooks offer season win total odds on the Cavaliers.
It can't be that surprising; Virginia is just 49-73 SU in its last 10 years and has just two winning falls during that stint. Mike London was given the axe after six completely uninspired seasons. Then the Cavs pulled a stunner by coaxing Bronco Mendenhall away from BYU to take over this decrepit program.
Mendenhall was an excellent coach for the past decade at BYU, guiding those wacky Mormons to a 93-37 record the past 10 years and through both periods of dominance in the Mountain West and uncertainty in the wilderness of the Independents. Mendenhall wanted a new challenge, and he has certainly found one in Charlottesville.
Virginia has six starters back on both sides of the ball and isn't a particularly deep or experienced group. However, the Cavaliers were definitely better than their record in each of the past two seasons. They went just 9-15 straight up the past two years but were a solid 16-8 against the spread while facing two of the toughest schedules in the country.
Further, it is not as if Virginia was a walkover team losing by double-digits each week. Only five of those 15 losses were by 10 or more points, and the Cavs covered the spread in three of those games (expected blowouts). Virginia actually outscored opponents on the season in 2014 (25.8-24.1) despite posting a losing record.
I'm not exactly bullish on the Cavaliers' short-term prospects mainly because they have a really difficult first month of the season. They also close the year with three of four games on the road. But I do expect this team to remain competitive, and I think that they will pull an upset in one of their league home games. I wouldn't touch this number, and I think there's a great chance they get to five wins. But for now I'll take a wait-and-see with this team and will bet 'under'.
