2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Push'

Derek Mason enters his third year at the helm and has endured a slow, tortuous rebuilding phase at Vanderbilt. Now it's time to show some results at a school that went to a bowl game in each of his predecessor's three seasons in Nashville.

Mason has 16 returning starters to work with this fall, including seven three-year starters. However, this still is a relatively young team (just four senior starters), and there is plenty of room to grow for a group that outperformed expectations while going 7-5 against the spread last season.

Mason is hoping for improvement from sophomore quarterback Kyle Shurmur. Shurmur is the son of NFL coach Pat Shurmur. And like his dad, Kyle is too conservative with the ball. Vandy has four of its top five receivers back, and the Commodores need to find a way to stretch the field. That will help out talented running back Ralph Webb, who runs behind a bulky and experienced Vandy line.

Mason's specialty is on defense. And last year's team made a 12-point jump in points allowed, dropping from 33.3 to 21.0, good for No. 22 in the country. Vandy has some high-end linebackers in Zach Cunningham and Nigel Bowden (2014 leading tackler). They anchor a solid overall group that will be able to keep Vanderbilt in a lot of games.

I think that Vanderbilt is going to be knocking on the door of a bowl bid all November…before coming up short. They should get three wins from their nonconference slate, and I think they can take down South Carolina in their Thursday night opener. I also think the Commodores are good enough to spring an upset over another SEC team, getting them to five wins and improving their mark for the second straight season.

But I can't pull the trigger on that sixth win, although if I am wrong about this team it will likely be because I sold them short.
