2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'

For the first time in what seems like 12 years, Utah State enters the season with someone other than Chuckie Keeton projected to be under center. The six-year Aggie was one of the best players in school history, even with injuries sabotaging his final few seasons. But now Utah State has to move on, and fourth-year coach Matt Wells will look for new leaders to emerge and keep the Aggies near the top of the league hierarchy.

Junior quarterback Kent Myers seemed to fit the bill last year, completing over 60 percent of his passes with 16 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Myers has plenty to work with, particularly in the running game. Utah State averaged only 29 points per game last year. But if Myers takes the next step they should top 30 per game this year for the first time since 2013.

The Aggies defense took a significant step back last year, giving up 26.7 PPG after three straight seasons of allowing fewer than 20 per outing. Utah State lost its top five tacklers (and nine of its top 11), and Wells has to completely rebuild the front seven, which has just one starter back. They do have a pair of vets in the secondary. But how USU's defense comes together will be the storyline of the season.

Utah State had a great three-year run from 2012-14. But they're not that team any more. I don't think they will completely regress back to the joke that they were for most of the early 2000s. But the Mountain West is unforgiving. And if teams stay stagnant they will get passed over and then forgotten.

I easily hit with my 'under' prediction on the Aggies last year. I have to go that way again this season. They have only three home games after September, and I think they are going to have to hustle to get over .500 in league play for the sixth straight season. And even if they get to four wins, they aren't going to sweep their nonconference slate. I do think Utah State will keep its bowl streak alive, but I don't see seven victories.
