2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
The Golden Hurricane were a pleasant surprise in Philip Montgomery's first season in Tulsa. The former Baylor offensive coordinator was able to build on what has been a proud, successful program by getting Tulsa back to a bowl game following a two-year absence. Last year's six wins topped the meager five that they put up in 2013 and 2014, and now Montgomery is looking to continue the ascent.
Tulsa has a lot to work with. They have seven starters back on both sides of the ball and seven three-year starters overall. Quarterback Dane Evans is a senior leader with 30 starts under his belt. Evans threw for 4,300 and 25 touchdowns in the first year in Montgomery's system. I would expect even bigger and better numbers this time around, and I wouldn't be stunned to see Tulsa threaten to average 40 points per game.
Tulsa's defense is an obvious work in progress. During their most successful run of the past 20 years (2007-2010 under Todd Graham) they were explosive offensively and stout defensively. But Tulsa has allowed at least 39 points per game over the past two seasons, and that won't work at all.
Further, Tulsa was actually outgained (by 75 yards per game) and outscored (by three points per game) last year yet still nearly posted a winning record. Those stats don't jibe with their record and are kind of a red flag that this team wasn't nearly as good as its record may have looked, relatively speaking.
Also, Tulsa isn't the only team on their schedule that's improving. San Jose State, SMU, Tulane and Central Florida all should be much better this year. And they also have a brutal road schedule, with games at Ohio State, Houston and Memphis. If they can find two road wins on their slate - and Tulsa has gone a respectable 30-32 SU on the road the last 10 years - then I think the Hurricane can top last year's win total. But there's no value betting it that way. If I had to play this one I would likely look 'under', but I won't be surprised if it goes the other way.
