2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
Man, Willie Fritz has a lot of work to do.
Fritz was able to field an exceedingly competitive team at Georgia Southern the past two seasons while helping usher the Eagles program into the FCS. But Fritz was building on what Jeff Monken had built at Georgia Southern, with both coaches utilizing the triple-option offense.
Fritz will be building an option team at Tulane from the ground up. And while I believe that he will be able to pull it off in New Orleans if given enough time, there's no doubt that the Green Wave are going to have a brutal adjustment period.
Any change has to be welcome at Tulane. They've won three or fewer games in six of the past eight years and have had just two winning seasons in this young century. The Wave hasn't even been a good "bad" team over the past decade; If you kick out their fluke 2013 campaign, the Green Wave has gone just 44-63 against the spread (41 percent) over the past 10 years.
Tulane has a lot of experience on the defensive side. Nico Marley is a four-year starter and one of the most underrated college linebackers in the country. Four other three-year starters surround him, and this stop unit will benefit greatly if the offense can control the ball, and the clock, better than the previous year's offense.
Tulane has a really easy schedule. Their toughest opponent the first two months is Wake Forest. They have winnable games against Lafayette, UMass and Central Florida, three teams that went 7-29 straight up last season, as well as a game against Southern. But if they don't have four wins by mid-October, they aren't going to get there. I wouldn't touch this number, but if I had to I would play 'under' as I don't think these guys are better than last year's team given the significant system changes this program is undergoing.
