This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Ricky Dimon - 5/18/2016
A. Appeal . Tom Brady has been hit with a four-game suspension for the start of the regular season-again. He may avoid serving the suspension-again. Brady and the NFL Players Association are expected to file an appeal by next Monday. If the petition for a rehearing is granted, the Patriots' QB could be the available for the entire 2016 season…after which we'll probably have to deal with this whole "deflategate" issue again next year.
B. Bautista, Jose . How Bautista did not hit the proverbial canvas this past Sunday is one of life's great mysteries. After all, Rangers' second baseman Rougned Odor went all Floyd Mayweather on him. Wait, saying he went all Mike Tyson would be more accurate.
C. Curry, Stephen . Curry last week became the first unanimous MVP in NBA history and the first Warriors' player to win multiple MVP awards. The former Davidson star will have to continue playing like the back-to-back MVP that he is, because Golden State is in a 1-0 hole against Oklahoma City after falling at home 108-102 in Game 1 on Monday. The Warriors are -8.5 favorites on Wednesday, per Bovada Sportsbook.
D. Djokovic, Novak . Is the French Open men's singles title suddenly up for grabs? Djokvovic is still No. 1 in the world by a mile, but he failed to triumph on the clay courts of Monte-Carlo last month and he lost to Andy Murray in the Rome final this past weekend. Roland Garros is also the only major that still eludes Djokovic in his illustrious career.
E. Elliott, Brian . After giving up 12 goals in a three-game stretch against Chicago in round one, the Blues' goalie has gone 10 straight outings without allowing more than three. This stretch includes two Game 7 victories over the Blackhawks and Stars. Elliott has limited opponents to one goal in four of St. Louis' last seven contests. The Blues and Sharks are tied 1-1 heading into Game 3 on Thursday.
F. French Open .The story is a similar one on the women's side, with the world No. 1 heading into Paris as a clear favorite. Unlike Djokovic, though, Serena Williams warmed up for the season's second Grand Slam in perfect fashion by capturing the Rome title. Serena beat fellow American Madison Keys in the final. MyBookie.ag has Serena and Djokovic as +200 and -135 favorites, respectively.
G. Goff, Jared . Get ready for a lot off Goff on HBO in August. "Hard Knocks" is focusing on the Rams this summer. And now that filming is underway, the network released some footage for the first time last week.
H. Hanley Ramirez . Boston's first baseman launched a 468-foot home run in last week's 13-5 win over Oakland. Is that far? Well, it is by anyone except Giancarlo Stanton's standards. The Red Sox (Wright) are -107 favorites at Kansas City (Kennedy) on Wednesday, according to BetOnline Sportsbook.
I. Invictus Games . Big ups to Prince Harry for founding the games, in which the participants are wounded veterans. And even bigger ups to to the competitors for how they performance last week in Orlando. Great stuff.
J. Jason Day . Jordan Spieth's recovery, or lack thereof, from his Masters meltdown is the biggest story in golf right now. But how good is Jason Day? The world No. 1 dominated the field at The Players Championship last week to the tune of a four-shot victory. Spieth,in his first tournament since Augusta, missed the cut. BookMaker has Spieth as a +815 favorite to win this week's AT&T Byron Nelson.
K. Ks . Twenty of them, to be exact. Max Scherzer mowed down 20 batters in last Wednesday's 3-2 win over Detroit. Washington's ace added 10 more strikeouts on Tuesday but was outdueled by Noah Syndergaard in a 2-0 Mets' victory. 5Dimes Sportsbook has the Nationals (Gonzalez) as -104 underdogs at the Mets (Colon) on Wednesday.
L. LaMarcus Aldridge . In the first two games against Oklahoma City, Aldridge averaged 39.5 points. But after shooting a ridiculous 33-for-44 in those two outings, the Spurs' power forward never shot better than 50 percent in the last four contests and never scored more than 24 points.
M. Madden cover . EA Sports announced last week that Rob Gronkowski will be on the cover of Madden 17. There are several Rated R ways EA Sports could go about putting Gronk on the cover, such as using a scene of him on his party ship or pretty much any snapshot of his standard weekend shenanigans. It looks, however, that the Pats' star tight end is merely spiking a football in his cover photo.
N. Nyquist . The Kentucky Derby champion is a perfect 8-0 lifetime. A 9-0 mark after Saturday's Preakness Stakes would put Nyquist within one victory of becoming the second Triple Crown winner in as many years. Bovada Sportsbook has Nyquist as a -160 favorite to win the Preakness.
O. Orlando Magic . Rarely are the Magic in the news this late in the postseason-or even in the postseason at all. Not surprisingly, it isn't for a great reason. Head coach Scott Skiles, who was 35-47 in his only season in Orlando, resigned abruptly last Thursday.
P. Prices . The Masters still boasts the best concession prices in the state of Georgia and probably even in the entire universe. But concessions at the Falcons' new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which is set to open in 2017, will be gloriously cheap. Management announced the pricing plans earlier this week. Among the $2 options are soft drinks, hot dogs, pretzels, and popcorn. Now if you can just manage to get invited to the game and avoid ticket prices, you're golden.
Q. Quick little monkeys . Although it is plainly obvious that Thunder big man Steven Adams did not mean any harm by it, he used a poor choice of words during a postgame interview following his team's Game 1 victory at Golden State. Adams called the Warriors' guards "quick little monkeys." That wasn't the only violation OKC committed late on Monday night (see: Russell Westbrook), but it was the only one that got called. Golden State is a -190 favorite at BetOnline Sportsbook to win the series.
R. Raptors . Toronto dominated Game 7 against Miami 116-89 this past Sunday.Kyle Lowry had 35, DeMar DeRozan went for 28, and Bismack Biyombo delivered 17 points and 16 rebounds. Bismack who? Bismacknotgonnadoaswellagainstcleveland.
S. Steve McElvene . McElvene, who recently wrapped up his freshman season with the Dayton basketball team, died last Thursday at age 20. He set the school's single-season blocks record with 56. R.I.P.
T. Truex Jr., Martin . Truex was ready to go all Rougned Odor on someone after last week's Sprint Cup event at Dover Motor Speedway. And why not? He led 47 laps before running into the back of a stalled Jimmie Johnson. "I want to get out and punch somebody," Truex admitted. "Seriously. Hard. Like, as hard as I can."
U. UFC . To be for sale, or not to be for sale…. That is the question. According to multiple reports, UFC management is looking to sell the company and could rake in $4 billion in such a deal. President Dana White, who is also a minority owner, has denied those reports and insists the mixed martial arts giant is not on the market.
V. Valuable . LeBron James questioned the definition of "valuable" after learning that Curry earned MVP honors for a second straight season. It's unclear what there is to question, but the good news for LeBron is that his team is up 1-0 in its conference finals and Curry's is not. The Cavaliers are +140 at GT Bets to win the NBA title.
W. Washington Capitals . The Caps have still not been to a single conference final during the Alex Ovechkin era. Their latest playoff failure came in the form of an eliminating Game 6 loss at Pittsburgh last Tuesday, when the Penguins prevailed 4-3 in overtime. As usual, however, it was not exactly Ovechkin's fault. The 30-year-old contributed two goals and five assists in the series. The Penguins are -130 favorites at Tampa Bay in Game 2 on Wednesday, as indicated by MyBookie.ag.
X. Xander Bogaerts . Boston's shortstop is in the midst of an 11-game hitting streak that includes seven multi-hit performances. He is batting over .400 this month with four three-hit outings.
Y. Young fan . A young Oakland A's fan made an impressive snag of a foul ball hit by none other than Odor during the sixth inning of Monday's game. The boy promptly walked a few paces to his right and gave it to a woman sitting in the row in front of him. Apparently she had given him a foul ball earlier in the game. Or maybe he just didn't want to keep a ball hit by Rougned Odor.
Z. Zlatan Ibrahimovic . The Paris Saint-Germain star confirmed last week that will leave the club this summer. In his final match at Parc des Princes this past Saturday, Ibrahimovic scored twice in a 4-0 victory over Nantes to break the PSG single-season club record for goals with 38.
