A. Anthony Davis
. The Pelicans' big man will be shut down for the remainder of the season due to ongoing knee and shoulder problems, which will require surgery this spring
or summer. One year after make it to the playoffs, New Orleans is a horrendous 26-43 and nowhere close to a postseason berth.
B. Brad Boxberger
. Tampa Bay's closer will miss at least eight weeks after undergoing abdominal muscle surgery. In 2015, Boxberger recorded 41 saves in 47 opportunities
while compiling a 3.71 ERA. The Rays are +700 at BetOnline Sportsbook to win the American
League East.
C. Champions League
. The draw for the quarterfinals was held this past weekend and produced a blockbuster matchup between Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.
Additionally, Barcelona will face Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich will go up against Benfica, and Real Madrid will battle Wolfsburg. Barca is a +137
favorite at BookMaker to win the title.
D. Day, Jason
. As we know from the end of last season, when Day gets hot-watch out. Now would be a good time to get hot again as the Masters is less than a month away.
Day showed signs of doing just that when he triumphed at Bay Hill on Sunday. The Australian birdied the 17th hole and delivered a clutch par
save on 18 to beat Kevin Chappell by one stroke. Day is +1000 at Bovada Sportsbook to win this week's match-play championship and +700 to win
the Masters.
E. Eleven
. That's how many games in a row LeBron James and the Cavs have lost at Miami. They got trounced by the Heat 122-101 on Saturday, prompting LeBron to call
his team's futility in South Beach "a little concerning." Cleveland is a -11 home favorite over Denver
on Monday, per GT Bets.
F. Fighting Irish
. It was a good week for Notre Dame, and that's putting it mildly. On the hardwood, the Irish punched a ticket to the Sweet 16 with defeats of Michigan and
Stephen F. Austin. In advance of the 2017 football season, they got a commitment from QB Avery Davis on Saturday. The junior from Dallas is the No. 4
dual-threat quarterback in his class.
G. Gonzaga
. Death, taxes, and the Zags doing work in the NCAA Tournament…. Gonzaga is back in the Sweet 16 thanks to double-digit wins last week over Seton Hall and
Utah. Head coach Mark Few's program has now been to the Sweet 16 a record four times as a double-digit seed and seven times overall.
H. Hulk Hogan
. Hogan was awarded $115 million last week after winning his lawsuit against Gawker Media for releasing a portion of a sex tape involving Hogan that was
recorded without his knowledge. The moral of the story: if you're famous, make sex tapes.
I. Indian Wells
. Novak Djokovic lifted yet another trophy on Sunday when he clobbered Milos Raonic 6-2, 6-0 in the Indian Wells final. Djokovic also beat Rafael Nadal for
the sixth time in a row with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory in the semis. Is there any athlete more dominant in any sport right now? Nope.
J. Just a suit
. That's how Richard Sherman characterized Roger Goodell in an interview on Sunday while discussing the proposed rule in which players would get ejected
for two personal fouls in a single game. That's probably what almost every NFL player is thinking, but leave it to Sherman to actually go out and say it.
K. Kris Bryant
. The Cubs' third baseman went undercover to prank the Mesa Community College baseball team last week. Bryant was brought in as a transfer from Europe
named Roy. The Mesa players figured something was amiss when "Roy" started belting homers left and right in batting practice.
L. "Like super glue."
That's how Hawks' forward Paul Millsap described the ball that was doctored by Rockets' center Dwight Howard on Saturday. Howard admitted to rubbing
Stickum on the ball and said he has been using it for the last five years, adding, "it's not a big deal." Well, except for the fact that it's illegal in
the NBA. SportsBettingOnline.ag has Atlanta as a -6.5
home favorite over Washington on Monday.
M. Middle Tennessee
. No matter that the Blue Raiders got blown out 75-50 by Syracuse during second-round action on Sunday. MTSU will never forget what probably has to be
considered the biggest upset in Big Dance history. It pulled off a 90-81 victory over Michigan State, which was favored by 16.5 points and picked to win
the entire tournament in more ESPN brackets than any other team in the field. WagerWeb has Syracuse as
a +4.5 underdog against Gonzaga.
N. Northern Iowa
. No team has run a more extreme gamut of emotions in the span of three days in the NCAA Tournament. And no team ever will again. In the first round on
Friday, the Panthers upset Texas 75-72 on a half-court buzzer-beater by Paul Jesperson. On Sunday, they suffered the biggest last-minute collapse in the
history of college basketball. UNI led Texas A&M by 12 points with less than 40 seconds remaining in regulation before ultimately going down in
double-overtime.The Aggies are +1.5 underdogs against Oklahoma in the Sweet 16,
according to BetOnline Sportsbook.
O. Opening Day
. The Marlins have chosen Wei-Yin Chen as their Opening Day starter over Jose Fernandez. Chen will toe the rubber at home against Detroit on April 5. The
30-year-old went 46-32 with a 3.72 over four seasons in Baltimore before signing a five-year, $80 million deal with Miami in January.
P. Perkins, Kendrick
. Perkins got tossed from the Pelicans' game last Friday night against Portland for levying a forearm to the chin of Blazers' guard Damian Lillard. "I'm
from Oakland," Lillard said when asked about the incident, indicating that this was not his first rodeo in terms of getting punched.
Q. Quits
. That's what veteran reliever Rafael Soriano called it on Sunday. Soriano spent 14 seasons in the major leagues with Seattle, Atlanta, the Yankees,
Washington, and the Cubs. The 36-year-old signed a minor-league deal with Toronto last month but never reported to spring training.
R. Rashford, Marcus
. Manchester United's 18-year-old striker is enjoying a meteoric rise to fame. He did nothing to slow down the hype train on Sunday, when his goal in the
16th minute ultimately won the Manchester Derby at Manchester City for the visiting Red Devils. Man U's 1-0 victory leaves it just one point
back of the Sky Blues for fourth place on the English Premier League table.
S. Stephen Curry
. Curry picked a bad time to have a bad game. Against the Warriors' biggest rival in San Antonio, the reigning MVP went 4-for-18 and 1-for-12 from long
range in an 87-79 road loss this past Saturday. There would, of course, be a worse time for such a performance-you know, like in the Western Conference
Finals. Golden State is a -150 favorite at MyBookie.ag to win the NBA title.
T. Tennessee Titans
. General manager Jon Robinson said over the weekend that he will need a "king's ransom" from another team in order to give up the No. 1 overall pick in
the upcoming NFL Draft. Robinson added that it will take "a substantial amount of picks." Ole Miss offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil is the trending choice
according to a lot of mocks, but the brother of Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa made a pitch by wearing a Titans jersey to Bosa's pro day. "Well
played," the team told him.
U. UK
. The 2016 Sweet 16 will come and go without Kentucky. John Calipari's first loss in the tournament second round as head coach of the Wildcats came at the
hands of Indiana on Saturday. Tyler Ulis and Jamal Murray combined for 43 points, but nobody else on Kentucky scored more than seven. The Hoosiers are +300
at GT Bets to win the East Regional.
V. Victoria Azarenka
. Down goes Serena! Down goes Serena! The world No. 1 has been susceptible to upsets of late, but that does not make Azarenka's triumph in Indian Wells any
less surprising. Azarenka prevailed over Williams 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday to capture arguably the biggest title in tennis outside of the four Grand Slams.
W. Walker, Tray
. Walker, a cornerback for the Ravens, died last Friday after sustaining injuries in a dirt-bike accident. He was 23 years old. R.I.P.
X. Xavier
. The Musketeers' heartbreak did not reach Northern Iowa levels (what could ever reach that?), but they did lose a brutal one to Wisconsin on Sunday.
Bronson Koenig drained two three-pointers in the final 13 seconds for the Badgers, who had trailed almost the entire second half. Koenig's buzzer-beater
three gave Wisconsin a 66-63 victory. 5Dimes Sportsbook has the Badgers as +1 underdogs against Notre
Dame.
Y.Young fan
. Nothing showcases the joy of victory and the agony of defeat quite like the NCAA Tournament. And nowhere was the agony part more evident than on the face
of a young Dayton fan after his team fell to Syracuse in the first round. His pilot hat and goggles only enhanced the scene.
Z. Zidlicky, Marek
. The Islanders' defenseman has not played since March 6 because of an upper-body injury. And who knows what the problem is specifically, as hockey
requires teams to announce nothing more than upper or lower body. Whatever it is, it's not helping NYI. The team has lost three in a row and is now just
five points inside the playoff cut line. New York is a -129 home favorite over Philadelphia on
Monday, as indicated by Bovada Sportsbook.
