2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'

It's been a rough few months for Kevin Sumlin. It wasn't long ago (2012) that Sumlin was considered one of the hottest coaches in college football. But after back-to-back 8-5 campaigns, and with a dearth of big victories in College Station in front of the home faithful, Sumlin enters this season with enormous pressure. It doesn't help that Sumlin has had a mass quarterback exodus, losing four quarterbacks to transfer over the last 18 months.

That said, I think Texas A&M could be a major sleeper team in the SEC this season. They don't have the goods to win a title or anything like that. But I definitely think that this group is undervalued heading into the fall.

A&M was able to fill its quarterback vacancy with former Oklahoma starter Trevor Knight. Knight is not a great passer. But he is mobile and experienced, and Sumlin has a very QB-friendly, plug-and-play system that should bring out his best. And helping out is the fact the Aggies are loaded at wide receiver, where Christian Kirk and Josh Reynolds combined for 131 catches and nearly 2,000 yards last year.

Knight will be joined in the backfield by another fellow Oklahoma transfer, running back Keith Ford. But the offense's biggest X-factor is a young, shaky offensive line.

The Aggies were actually pretty good defensively last year. They were No. 4 in the nation against the pass. That was due in part to the fact that they allowed a horrendous 214 yards per game on the ground, No. 107, and they gave up just 22 points per game. If they can get a little better in the front seven then they will be in business.

A&M's schedule doesn't do many favors. They open against a very good UCLA team, although that game is in College Station. The Aggies also hit the road for three straight, including a neutral-site game with Arkansas, before hosting SEC East favorite Tennessee. The Aggies then have their bye before heading to Alabama and the close the season at LSU.

The Aggies have three gimme wins. They should also win at South Carolina. That means they need to find three more wins to top this number. I think they will do it. Sumlin's group has gone 17-15 in four years in the SEC. I think this is the year they get a big home win (or two), and I would play this team 'over'.
