2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Tennessee was everyone's sleeper team in the SEC coming into last season. With 17 returning starters from 2014's seven-win club the scuttlebutt was that the Volunteers could be poised for their first SEC East title since 2007. The Vols had that - and potentially a trip to the College Football Playoff - within their grasp. But four losses by a touchdown or less, three of which in games where they led by two touchdowns, kept Tennessee outside the Top 25 and the SEC title game.
The Vols again have 17 starters back and are one of the most experienced teams in the country. They will enter the season with legitimate expectations as one of the favorites to win the entire SEC, and Butch Jones has a team capable of making a run at a national title.
It starts on offense with quarterback Josh Dobbs. The senior is entering his third year as a starter and has six of his top seven receivers back. Dobbs will also benefit from the Vols rushing attack, led by Jalen Hurd (1,353 yards) and Alvin Kamara (710). Mix in four of five starting linemen back and this group could be even better than the unit that averaged 35 points per game last year.
Defensively, the Vols have a load of talent and experience. It starts with all-SEC players Derek Barnett and Jalen Reeves-Maybin. Tennessee has five three-year starters on this defense, and the group has cut its points per game allowed by nearly 10 during Jones' tenure.
The Vols will likely start the season in the Top 10, and now they are a big buzz team nationally, rather than just in SEC country. The schedule is brutal, though. Tennessee squares off against Virginia Tech in Week 2 on a semi-neutral field (Bristol, TN). They also have a four-week stretch in which they face Florida, at Georgia, at Texas A&M and then against defending champion Alabama. How they fare in that stretch will determine how their season shakes out because they shouldn't lose a single game after their bye.
I think that Tennessee will get to 10 wins this year. I think they may be a little overvalued in terms of their individual games. But on the whole, I think they are even better than their season win total suggests. If you assume a loss to Alabama - though Tennessee will have a great chance to win that one after losing just 19-14 on the road last season - then that still leaves some wiggle room for the Vols to suffer an upset and still beat this win total. Believe the hype. Play Tennessee 'over'.
