2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'

David Shaw has done more than enough in his five years at the head of the Stanford program to be considered far outside Jim Harbaugh's shadow. Shaw has gone 54-14 straight up and 42-26 against the spread with the Cardinal over the past five seasons, both among the best records in the country, and I don't see any reason to doubt his ability to reload after the graduation of Kevin Hogan.

Hogan, a four-year starter at quarterback, is in the NFL. But Heisman hopeful Christian McCaffrey - who should've won the award last season - is the most versatile weapon in college football. He gained nearly 4,000 all-purpose yards (college record 3,864) and scored 15 touchdowns. He will help smooth the transition from Hogan to Keller Chryst, a Top 5 quarterback recruit that takes over as a sophomore.

The Cardinals play a very defined style under Shaw. Stanford is powerful at the point of attack and likes to stack up and grind down opponents. However, they are extremely young in the trenches this fall. Six of their offensive starters, including three linemen and the tight end, are sophomores. Two of their three defensive linemen are also second-year players, as are both starting corners.

I think that Stanford is overrated coming into this season. They are the second-least experienced team in the Pac-12 and one of the 10 least experienced teams in the country. McCaffrey will help overcome a lot of that. But if anything happens to him then this offense will could be awful.

Stanford enters the season at No. 7 in the Coaches Poll. That is stunning to me. If they survive the opening month they do have a favorable schedule. But I definitely see four losses on their schedule and will gladly take them 'under'.
