This week's look at the hottest and coldest bets in sports features a couple of college basketball programs-one with a high-profile, first-year coach-that have finally hit their stride and been a boon to bettors. In the NBA, a look is taken at a team that's struggled straight up most of the season, but thanks to an emerging rookie has covered four straight while improving their overall ATS hit mark to 55 percent.
Let's get started.
Texas (15-7 SU, 10-11 ATS, five straight ATS wins)
Shaka Smart inherited a talented, but mostly dysfunctional team in his first year in Austin. The turmoil from a season ago has been firmly put in the rear-view mirror after a slow start as this year's version of the Longhorns is finally gelling under their new coach. Texas has won six of its last seven straight up, with the only loss coming on the road to Kansas. Additionally, they have covered five straight, with three of those coming as a road underdog. Junior guard and NBA prospect Isaiah Thomas has averaged 15.4 points and 5.0 assists per game to lead the Longhorns in both categories, while senior center has Cameron Ridley has averaged a double-double (12.7 PPG, 10.0 RPG) while patrolling the interior.
The Longhorns are now up to No. 16 in RPI while owning an impressive five victories against teams ranked in the RPI Top 50. Next up for Smart and Texas is a home game against Texas Tech on Saturday, followed by a huge road trip to Norman to take on No. 1 Oklahoma on Monday.
Georgia (12-8 SU, 12-8 ATS, five straight ATS wins)
The Bulldogs made it five straight covers on Tuesday when upsetting No. 25 South Carolina at home. It's been largely a season of ups-and-downs for Georgia, but the veteran Bulldogs are in the midst of their best streak of the year. Junior guard J.J. Frazier leads Georgia in both scoring (16.4 points per game) and assists (4.4), and three other Bulldogs also average double digits in points. Coach Mark Fox has steadily and quietly turned Georgia into a competitive program that's capable of finishing in the top half of the SEC. That's a far cry from just a few years back.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a home game against Auburn on Saturday followed by a trip to take on Kentucky on Tuesday.
Other hot college basketball bets: Wichita State (16-5 SU, 12-7 ATS, seven straight ATS wins), Chattanooga (19-3 SU, 12-6 ATS, six straight ATS wins), Pacific (10-8 SU, 7-8 ATS, six straight ATS wins), Seton Hall (15-6 SU, 14-6 ATS, five straight ATS wins), Pepperdine (14-8 SU, 11-11 ATS, five straight ATS wins), Louisiana-Monroe (12-8 SU, 7-9 ATS, five straight ATS wins), Tennessee State (16-5 SU, 9-3-1 ATS, five straight ATS wins)
Cold college basketball bets: East Tennessee State (13-9 SU, 8-8-1 ATS, five straight ATS losses), St. Mary's (18-2 SU, 12-5 ATS, five straight losses), Georgia State (12-7 SU, 6-11 ATS, five straight ATS losses), North Texas (7-14 SU, 3-12-1 ATS, five straight ATS losses), Northeastern (12-11 SU, 9-11 ATS, four straight ATS losses), Harvard (9-11 SU, 5-8 ATS, four straight ATS losses)
NBA
Denver Nuggets (19-30 SU, 26-20-3 ATS, four straight wins)
The Nuggets have been a profitable proposition all season, but they've been particularly effective of late. They made it four straight covers on Tuesday with a 112-93 straight up win against Toronto as a 4.5-point home favorite. The key for Denver has been the massively-improved production of 20-year-old Serbian rookie Nikola Jokic. The big man has registered double-doubles in each of the last three gamesand has averaged 19.3 points with 11.7 rebounds during the span. Jokic looks to be the real deal, but the good news for bettors is he's still largely an unknown to the general public. This is perhaps the reason the Nuggets continue to get what appear to be rather generous spreads.
Next up for Denver is a road game at Utah tonight, at home against Chicago on Friday and at New York on Sunday.
Cold NBA bets: Toronto Raptors (33-16 SU, 26-22-1 ATS, four straight losses), Milwaukee Bucks (20-31 SU, 24-26-1 ATS, four straight losses)
