As it turned out, this was "next" year for the Chicago Cubs. But it's never too early to start thinking about the actual next year. With a young
nucleus intact, the Cubs should have a good chance of parlaying their first World Series triumph since 1908 into a real dynasty. But with an amazing 2016
Fall Classic now over, football and basketball can take center stage for the time being.

2017 World Series
Chicago Cubs (+350)
-The Cubs capped off an epic World Series comeback from 3-1 down against Cleveland earlier this month. That was followed by the largest gathering of people
in U.S. history (5 million people at the parade). Now business is at hand. Aroldis Chapman and Dexter Fowler may be gone, but everyone else is back-and
young.
Boston Red Sox (+800)
-Boston got booted out of the postseason by the Indians in lightning-quick fashion, but the team improved by 15 games from last year to go 93-69. Pablo
Sandoval is reportedly in better shape, Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts will be back, and the Red Sox are willing to spend big money on free agents.
Los Angeles Dodgers (+900)
-The Dodgers came close to appearing in the Fall Classic for the first time since winning it all in 1988. They took down the high-powered Nationals and led
Chicago 2-1 before Cubs' talent took over. Clayton Kershaw exorcized his playoff demons, which bodes well for L.A.'s future.
Washington Nationals (+1000)
- Speaking of talent, that has never been an issue in Washington. The club has compiled winning records in five straight seasons and has been at least 10
games over .500 in four of them. But…playoffs?!? Playoffs?!?!?!?!? Those have been a different story for Bryce Harper and company.
College Football Playoff
Alabama (Even)
- Since trailing Ole Miss 24-3 in Sept. 17, the Crimson Tide have been bullying opponents left and right. They only scored 10 points against LSU last week,
but LSU did not come close to scoring any. Auburn is the toughest test left, but that game is at home, and the SEC Championship should be a joke.
Ohio State (+500)
- Ohio State somehow lost to Penn State, but it can still win the Big Ten title if it beats Michigan, and the Big Ten champion will almost certainly be a
part of the College Football Playoff festivities. At No. 5 in the latest CFP rankings, the Buckeyes are considered the best of the one-loss teams.
Michigan (+500)
-Jabrill Peppers has been doing it all for the Wolverines, to the extent that he has a chance (albeit slim) to become the first primarily defensive player
to win the Heisman Trophy since Michigan's own Charles Woodson in 1997.His supporting cast is not bad, either, as UM is 9-0 and has won every game by at
least a touchdown.
Clemson (+650)
-The Tigers will make the College Football Playoff with ease if they stay undefeated. But the question is: can they stay undefeated? Clemson almost lost to
Louisville, N.C. State, and Florida State. The ACC title game may be the last real test on the schedule. Washington is a +800 fifth choice.
ACC basketball regular-season champion
Duke (Even)
-Trying unsuccessfully to repeat as National Champions, the Blue Devils stumbled to a 25-11 record last season and lost to Oregon in the Sweet 16. Brandon
Ingram is gone, but Grayson Allen is back and a heralded freshman group features Harry Giles, Jayson Tatum, and Marques Bolden.
North Carolina (+400)
- The Tar Heels reached the title game in 2015-16 and came within a second of going to overtime against Villanova. Although the losses of Brice Johnson and
Marcus Paige will be big, Justin Jackson returns along with Kennedy Meeks and Joel Berry II.
Virginia (+700)
-Three ACC teams register in the top 10 of the AP's preseason rankings: Duke (No. 1), North Carolina (No. 6), and Virginia (No. 8). As usual, head coach
Tony Bennett's Cavaliers will rely on defense-especially with Malcolm Brogdon gone. Memphis transfer Austin Nichols will be a big addition.
Syracuse (+700)
-The Orange snuck into the NCAA Tournament as a No 10 seed last season and ended up going all the way to the Final Four. They have senior leadership in
Andrew White III and Tyler Roberson to go along with a strong freshman class. Louisville is also a +700 third choice.
NFL MVP
(Bovada Sportsbook)
Tom Brady (+160)
- The two-time MVP could be in line for a third. Since returning from a four-game suspension to begin the 2016 campaign, Brady has completed 98 of 134
passes for 1,319 yards with 12 touchdowns and no interceptions through four outings. While Brady was on the shelf, New England got shut out by Buffalo.
Matt Ryan (+300)
- We already know with certainty what the Patriots are without Brady. What would the Falcons be without Ryan? Probably not very good. With him, they are
6-3 and leading the NFC South. Ryan has completed 69.6 percent of his passes with 23 touchdowns and just three picks this season.
Ezekiel Elliott (+900)
- Rookies are running the show for the Tony Romo-less Dallas offense. Dak Prescott has steadied things under center, but it is Elliott who is in the MVP
discussion. The former Ohio State standout has rushed 177 times for 891 yards (5.0 average) and seven touchdowns.
Derek Carr (+900)
- Break up the Raiders! The once-moribund franchise is 7-2 this season, leading the AFC West, and would have a first-round bye if the playoffs began today.
Carr is completing 66.1 percent of his passes for 2,505 yards with 17 touchdowns and just three interceptions.
