2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'

No one can say enough good things about what Steve Spurrier was able to build and accomplish at South Carolina. In the 60 years between the end of World War II and Steve Spurrier's hiring in 2005, South Carolina went to 10 bowl games. In the 11 years that Spurrier was in Columbia he guided the Gamecocks to nine. But Spurrier ditched USC last year during the season, damning the Gamecocks to an ugly 3-9 year and casting a lot of questions on the future of this program.

Will Muschamp was brought in to try to right the ship. The problem is that Muschamp has already proven that he is a better defensive coordinator than he is a head coach. Muschamp was gently pushed out of the Texas program and then completely flamed out at Florida. This might be his last best chance to prove that he belongs as the coach of a major program.

Unfortunately, Muschamp doesn't have much to work with. South Carolina has just nine returning starters from last year's disaster. He will be relying on a freshman quarterback who will have to play without the team's top three receivers, top rusher, and four of five linemen.

Defensively, South Carolina has seven seniors in its starting lineup. And there are enough athletes here for Muschamp to work his magic on this side of the ball.

South Carolina opens with three of its first four games on the road - and they are all SEC games. That's a problem for a young team with a new coaching staff. The home schedule doesn't exactly lighten up either, with A&M, UGA, Tennessee and Missouri all slated to come to Columbia.

The Gamecocks should pick up three wins from their nonconference opponents. And I think they can spring an upset in league play. But I don't see any scenario where this team gets to six wins. I'll call for them to come up just short of a bowl game and get to five wins. But if I have to make an over/under pick, I think the odds are that they come up short rather than exceed expectations. Play 'under' but look for a 'push'.
