2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'

A scan over the last 15 years of San Jose football shows a pretty clear trend of steady peaks and valleys. Over the last 14 years, SJSU football has either increased or decreased its win total in back-to-back years five times. Only once during that time - when they dropped from nine wins in 2006 to five wins in 2007 only to bounce up to six wins in 2008 - did they buck that trend.

Well, the Spartans scraped themselves off a three-win floor in 2014 to win six games last year (including a bowl win). Will recent history and form hold? If so, it means San Jose could be a team to watch this season.

Ron Caragher is in his fourth season as head coach and now, stacked with his own recruits and players that he's developed, we can see what he is capable of. SJSU has 16 returning starters, including a stellar seven three-year starters, back on both sides of the ball. They did lose sweet playmaker Tyler Ervin on offense. But they brought back essentially every other key piece on offense and defense for a team that was really competitive against top competition last year.

San Jose State actually outscored its opponents last year. And they were able to hang within two touchdowns of Oregon State, Auburn, and BYU (2-1 ATS). This season their road schedule is a bear, and I'll be stunned if they win more than two games outside of San Jose this fall. (Two wins would be an accomplishment.) That means San Jose would have to find four wins at home this year to get 'over'. And I think they can do it.

SJSU will beat Portland State. They will be favored over Hawaii, Nevada and UNLV and should win at Fresno State. That would leave San Jose just one upset away from a bowl game. And I think they can get it. I'll be an optimist and play 'over', thinking that if San Jose doesn't beat this number they will at least tie it.
