San Diego is one of the sunniest places in the country. So it is ironic that a dark cloud hangs over this Chargers franchise.

The specter of a move from the city that has hosted this team for over 50 years has cast a pall on this entire organization. Add in public relations disasters, poor front office management, and then some run-of-the-mill bad luck (injuries, etc.), and the Chargers are a team that really doesn't know what direction it is going.

When you have Philip Rivers, one of the Top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL and an all-time competitor, then you have a chance. But after coaxing nine-win seasons out of the Chargers in each of coach Mike McCoy's first two seasons, the Bolts finally came back to earth last year. Rivers still doesn't have much to work with, though, outside of the Keenan Allen, rejuvenated Melvin Gordon, and a bloated Antonio Gates. The Chargers line is still a sieve, and depth is nearly nonexistent.

The offense at least has hope. The defense, though, is a debacle.

San Diego fielded one of the worst-looking defenses in the NFL this preseason. They can't stop the run - at all - and the secondary looked completely disorganized. The front seven in San Diego is one of the worst in football, and I think teams will be able to cram the ball down the Chargers' throats all season long.

I think 7.5 wins is way too optimistic for this group. They will pull some upsets because of Rivers. But this isn't a good team. The fans have essentially tuned them out, and the ownership wants to leave town immediately. There are definitely eight or nine wins on this schedule, which is favorable. But if San Diego doesn't get off to a good start then I think the negativity surrounding this team will engulf it again. I want no part of the Chargers. Play 'under' or don't play at all.
