2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'

There's no way that Rutgers can compete in the Big Ten East this year. You know that. I know that. They know that. This division is one of the best in college football, and Rutgers is just a bug on a windshield. However, if you are looking for a sneaky-good team against the spread I think that the Scarlet Knights are going to be just good enough to make some numbers stick while being just bad enough not to arouse interest or suspicion.

I think new coach Chris Ash might be a bit over his head as a leading man after spending the last two seasons as a co-defensive coordinator under Urban Meyer. But he inherits an experienced team that is made up of a tough group of kids, and I don't think they will roll over for anyone this season.

The Knights have nine returning offensive starters, including improving quarterback Chris Laviano. Rutgers is changing its offensive scheme. But the Scarlet Knights have seven senior starters on this side of the ball, and they should adjust fairly quickly.

The Scarlet Knights lost their top three tacklers from a defense that was horrid last year. But they have 15 of their top 19 tacklers back, and you have to think that if Ash is going to make an instant impact anywhere it will be on this side of the ball. Rutgers is young in the secondary, even with all four starters back.

Rutgers isn't going to beat Ohio State. Or Michigan. Or Michigan State. Or any of the good teams on their schedule. And I think that this is a very good number as Rutgers should end up with either four or five wins. I think the Scarlet Knights' value is going to be more apparent in game-to-game situations; I can see them getting blown out at Ohio State but then coming back and giving Michigan a fight as a 20-point underdog, for example.

Again, this is a solid season win total number from Vegas. But if you're going to miss with this group I think I would definitely take a shot and miss high. Play 'over'.
