2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'

Darrell Hazell parlayed one lucky season at Kent State into a gig in a Big Six conference. And he's proven that he's swimming way out of his depth, going 6-30 overall in three years with half of his victories coming over FCS opponents. That mark is significantly worse than the man he replaced, Dan Hope, who was 16-23 (with a bowl win) in his first three years.

If Hazell is going to make a move, this is the time to do it. He has 16 starters back - all his recruits - and his starting lineup boasts 12 seniors. Purdue has nine three-year starters (and three four-year starters), and it is now or never for this crop.

Ironically, the fates of all of these seniors and upperclassmen are in the hands of sophomore quarterback David Blough. He is a redshirt. And he got his feet wet last year while splitting time with Austin Appleby. Now the job is his, and how Blough adapts to his new offensive coordinator will go a long way in determining this season's potential.

Defensively, Purdue, well, does have a defense. That's about the nicest thing I can say about a group that was No. 110 in total defense and No. 111 in points allowed. Their front seven should be vastly improved. But they are still a little too small to hold up against the crushing offensive lines of teams like Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin.

Beyond games against Eastern Kentucky and Nevada it's tough to predict any wins for Purdue. Hazell could actually double last year's win total and have his best-ever season…and Purdue could still come up short of this number. That's how low the bar is set. I think this team will threaten some of its bigger opponents, especially in West Lafayette, but I just don't see five victories here. I had Purdue pegged last season. This year should be more of the same. Play 'under'.
