2016 Season Win Total Pick: 'Under'
It's a new, old era in Philadelphia this year as former Andy Reid assistant Doug Pederson makes his head coaching debut for in The City of Battery Love. The irony of Pederson's hiring is pretty thick; Eagles fans and management ran uber-successful Andy Reid out of town - the scapegoat of some horrific personnel decisions gone wrong. Now just three years later the Eagles bring in a guy who will try to mimic everything Reid did and to pick up the pieces of the failed Chip Kelly experiment.
In a way, hiring Pederson is like going through a nasty divorce from your wife and then three years later marrying her less-attractive younger sister.
The Eagles roster has some rough spots. But it's not completely devoid of talent. I have felt that Philadelphia's defense has been better than its No. 30 and No. 28 rankings, respectively, the past two seasons. The Eagles D was often hung out to dry by a fast-paced offense that simply couldn't sustain or cash in on enough drives. Injuries, frustration and coaching also contributed to their demise.
New defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is one of the best in the business. He has ditched Philadelphia's goofy "hybrid" scheme and gone back to a flat 4-3 base. Schwartz has rebuilt the secondary with trusted players from his time in Buffalo, and the switch back to the 4-3 mitigates one of Philadelphia's big weakness (linebackers). As long as the defensive line holds up (depth is an issue), I expect this group to make huge leaps this season.
The offense is a whole other story. I contend that Kelly's scheme failed in Philadelphia mainly because of his atrocious personnel moves. Last year the offense was a very average No. 12 in yardage and No. 13 in scoring with Sam Bradford at the helm. Bradford took all the blame despite the fact that A) he hadn't played since 2013 and was learning a completely foreign system and B) the Eagles had by far the worst receiving corps in the league.
But Philadelphia's receivers are still terrible, and that's a big problem. Jordan Matthews stinks. Josh Huff is practice-squad caliber. Who knows if second-year man Nelson Agholor is any good? And the rest of the options are castoffs or rookies. I expect Bradford - who, ironically, was plagued by a comically bad supporting cast in St. Louis - to struggle again.
The Eagles gave a bunch of games away last year. Part of that was Kelly. Part of that was Bradford. Part of that was just a sloppy, disjointed organization with bad karma. I think the Eagles are going to be better than people expect this season. But their schedule is pretty unrelenting, especially the stretch of four road games in five weeks (three of which are divisional games).
I think Philadelphia will be a strong ATS wager, and they will definitely spring some upsets. But I think seven wins is asking a lot for a team that still has a lot of holes, minimal depth, and a new coaching staff that is making a systemic scheme change.
