2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
If we've learned anything about the Sooners the past decade it is that they have trouble handling success. The last four times that Oklahoma has entered the season in the Top 5 - and this year they opened at No. 3 in the Coaches Poll - they have finished No. 16 or worse. And twice, 2009 and 2014, they started in the Top 5 only to finish the season unranked. We will see if they can live up to the hype this time around.
Oklahoma made the College Football Playoff last year on the strength of the nation's No. 4 scoring offense (43.5 points per game). They outscored opponents by more than 21 points per game and won the Big 12 thanks to three straight late-season wins against Top 10 opponents. The Sooners have 13 starters back and are the obvious favorite to defend their league crown.
Senior quarterback Baker Mayfield was fantastic last year and is back under center this fall. He has the benefit of a star-studded backfield with Samaje Perine, a two-time All-American, and Joe Mixon, an accused woman-puncher, at the core of one of the nation's top rushing attacks. They will operate behind an incredibly young offensive line (four sophomores, one freshman) that is among the most massive in college football.
Oklahoma definitely has questions on defense. They lost six of their Top 10 tacklers from last season, including end Charles Tapper. But Oklahoma just reloads with talent every year, and they have one of the best, most experienced starting secondaries in the Midwest.
If the Sooners return to the college football playoffs, they certainly will have earned it. They open essentially on the road against No. 13 Houston in NRG Stadium. The Sooners also host No. 5 Ohio State on Sept. 17. Mix in road games at TCU and West Virginia as well as the Red River Shootout game against Texas. Oklahoma clearly has one of the toughest schedules in the country. But they also have the talent to survive it.
Oklahoma has all the pieces to be a national title contender. I still don't trust them. But I do think Oklahoma will win the Big 12 this season. I also think they'll take at least one loss along the way. My actual prediction for this team is 10-2 during the regular season. But if I am going to miss, I will miss high and play 'over'.
