2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
Urban Meyer has gone an amazing 50-4 in his four years in Columbus. He's won one national title and, frankly, I have a hard time thinking that they weren't one of the top four teams in college football last year. But this season will be Meyer's toughest test yet as Ohio State is set to fi eld one of the least experienced teams in the nation just one year after boasting one of the most experienced (with 12 NFL draft picks).
Ohio State has only six returning starters. It helps that one of them is quarterback J.T. Barrett, who can breath easy this season after enduring a quarterback controversy heading into last season. Barrett won't be looking over his shoulder now, and that should only help. What won't help is the departure of Ezekiel Elliott and OSU's top four receivers from last year.
The Buckeyes defense doesn't have a single senior starter. Last year's group was incredible, allowing just 15.1 points per game. But that won't be the case this year and Ohio State will be tested early in the season by several high-powered, fast-moving attacks.
Here is the thing though: Ohio State might not have a lot of starters back. But every player on this roster was recruited and handpicked by Meyer. They know the system, and all of them were highly-touted prospects coming into college. So while we don't recognize the names, we can be sure that these Bucks can play.
Ohio State's schedule is rough, to say the least. They have games against fellow national title contenders Oklahoma (on the road) and Michigan (at home). But it doesn't stop there. They have road games in back-to-back weeks at Wisconsin and at Penn State. Making matters worse, both opponents will be coming off a bye when they face the Buckeyes. Throw in a home date with Nebraska and a trip to Michigan State and there really aren't a lot of off weeks.
I know I am swimming upstream here - betting against Meyer's team hasn't made anyone rich - but I see three losses on their schedule. I don't think that Ohio State is going to beat Oklahoma or Michigan. So this really comes down to whether or not they are going to get tripped up in one of their other games. I think they will. That road schedule is just brutal, and I think they get tripped up. I will call for 9-3 and reluctantly predict 'under' here.
