2016 Season Win Total Pick: 'Under'
After nearly two decades of being one of the biggest jokes in the NFL, the Raiders enter the 2016 season as Everybody's Sleeper Team. Every bobblehead media member has been gushing over Oakland for the past three months, and for the first time that I can remember this team enters the season with legitimate expectations.
There is plenty of promise. Here's the problem: Everybody's Sleeper Team is always a bust.
The Raiders have entered that so-underrated-they-are-overrated category that teams find themselves in. Want a real sleeper? Try Tennessee. But the Raiders are on everyone's radar this year, which means that opposing teams aren't going to be taking this squad lightly as in seasons past.
Derek Carr is the real deal. He is the reason it is so easy to get behind this team. Carr is one of the best young quarterbacks in the game and the leader of an exciting young crop of skill players for the Raiders. Oakland has a powerful offensive line that has been bolstered by free agency the past two offseasons. And as long as health isn't an issue, this is a Raiders team that should average at least 27 points per game.
Oakland's defense has also been collecting pieces and is moving toward respectability. They upgraded the pass rush and the secondary, and leader Khalil Mack is one of the best young linebackers in the game. However, depth is a major problem for this stop unit. Their starting 11 could field a Top 20 defense. But injuries or wear-and-tear could cripple this team because they simply don't have enough quality veteran bodies.
This Oakland team is better. But they are just 3-10 against their season win total over the last 13 years. And the hype surrounding them is simply too much. Oakland has to make five road trips at least two time zones east. That is going to be an absolute crippler for a young team, and I don't see any way that the Raiders make it to .500. I think Oakland takes some knocks and takes a step back this season before taking a major stride forward next year. Play 'under'.
