I felt that N.C. State was the biggest disappointment in the ACC last season. Granted, the Wolfpack didn't get to dodge any of the top teams in the league, taking on Clemson, Florida State, Louisville and North Carolina. But with underrated quarterback Jacoby Brissett and 15 returning starters, the Pack went just 0-6 against bowl-eligible teams and couldn't top their modest 7.5 win total.

So where does Dave Doeren go from here? He has 14 returning starters this year and will hand the offense over to Boise State transfer Ryan Finley. He's got some seniors. He's got some three-year starters. He's got some talent - leading rusher, leading receiver, etc. But what are all these puzzle pieces going to add up to? And will it add up to anything more than just fodder for the stronger teams in this league?

The Wolfpack were completely average (No. 57) offensively last season. The defense underachieved a bit, finishing No. 29 in yards allowed but just No. 52 in points allowed. They need to generate more turnovers defensively and need to improve in the red zone if they are going to make any traction on either side of the ball.

This is a pretty stable team with a small ceiling and several subplots. But the elephant in the room for this group is its schedule. After an easy opening month that should yield three wins, the Pack open league play with a very winnable game at home against Wake Forest.

Then stuff gets real. N.C. State will be an underdog in its remaining eight games, meaning they would have to spring several upsets to beat their season win total. I don't see it happening. This team won't be a pushover. And they get a shot at Notre Dame, Florida State and Miami at home, so they could play the role of spoiler. But I think that this is an easy call. Take 'Under' and I see N.C. State right around 5-7 and, at best, 6-6.
