2016 Season Win Total Pick: 'Over'
The Tom Coughlin Era in the Meadowlands is over. The Giants were apparently the last ones to realize that Coughlin should've rode off into the sunset three years ago. Instead, he stuck around and guided a sloppy Giants team to three straight losing seasons before they finally sent him packing. That means for the first time in a decade New York enters a fall with fresh blood on the sidelines.
Ben McAdoo is just the third New York Giants coach since 1997 and just the sixth since Bill Parcells' first season in 1983. This is McAdoo's first head gig, and the jury is still very much out on what he has to offer. But unlike several other first-year coaches this season (Adam Gase, Hue Jackson), McAdoo has the benefit of familiarity with his players, having served as the offensive coordinator here the past two seasons.
New York's offense was outstanding last year, finishing in the Top 10 in total offense, passing and scoring. They could be even better this year if rookie Sterling Shepard matures quickly and if they get absolutely anything from perpetually injured Victor Cruz.
The Giants need to get better running the football this year. It needs to be a point of emphasis after finishing just No. 18 last year. For that to happen, the offensive line, particularly the right side, needs to improve significantly. The O-line is by far the biggest question mark on the team.
A defensive overhaul was needed after the Giants fielded the worst total defense in football last year. The Giants were horrible against the pass and finished No. 30 in points allowed. As such, they spent big money to lure Damon Harrison, Janoris Jenkins, Keenan Robinson and Olivier Vernon to town. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who I think is a complete fraud, no longer has any excuses. He needs to engineer a major overhaul with a group that still has terrible linebackers and minimal depth beyond its new starting 11.
The Giants are generally a pretty easy team to handicap: when they have high expectations they always flop and when they have no expectations they are always at their best. Expectations have to be pretty neutral heading into this season. They have a new coach, and they haven't been in the postseason in three years. But they were also major players in free agency, and there is the belief that this team is better than it has played.
New York is a flagship NFL franchise. And the last time they posted four straight losing seasons was back in the late 70s when they finished below in eight consecutive years. I think they will at least get back to .500 this season, so I would play 'over'.
