2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Missouri proved that they belong with the big boys by winning back-to-back SEC East titles in 2013 and 2014. But things went off the rails for the plucky Tigers last season, both on the field and off, and the end result was a bowl-less season and then the retirement of longtime coach Gary Pinkel.
Defensive coordinator Barry Odom was promoted from within, signaling some continuity moving forward in the Missouri program. Odom's first hire was Josh Heupel, formerly of Oklahoma, to come in and re-shape the offense. Odom and Heupel will be tasked with getting Missouri back into the postseason and becoming a factor in the SEC East again. And I think that they will be leading a team that is among the most underrated in the nation heading into 2016.
Missouri's defense is one of the best in the country. The Tigers finished in the Top 10 in total defense and scoring defense last season, and they bring back eight starters. Six starters along the front seven return from a group that was among the nation's leaders in tackles for loss. The secondary has two senior corners, and on the whole this group should again be among the Top 20.
All of the questions are on offense. Last year's veteran quarterback, Maty Mauk, flamed out during the season, and that caused major problems for the Tigers. Drew Lock got some experience and enters the fall as the starter. But he was awful last season and has a lot of ground to make up. Missouri lost four of its top five rushers and has just one offensive line starter back this season. The Tigers absolutely need to get things sorted out there if this team is going to improve on last year's comically bad 13.6 points per game (less than half of what they scored in 2014 and one third of what they scored in 2013).
Missouri has a very tough opener at West Virginia. They also have road games at LSU and at Florida to start October. But I don't think there is any doubt that the Tigers are going to get to six wins. Not a lot of books are offering odds on Missouri right now. But if you can find a book dangling anything at 6.0 or less then grab it quickly and play 'over'.
