2015 Record: 11-5
2016 Las Vegas Season Win Total: 8.5
2016 Season Win Total Pick: 'Over'
This season was supposed to be the breakout for the Minnesota Vikings. Last year whet their appetite with a division title and an "oh-my-god-how-did-he-miss-that-kick???" heartbreaking loss in the playoffs. But Minnesota entered the 2016 season with a roster stacked with young talent and had, I felt, the third-best team in the NFC and one of the top five or six in football.
This year was supposed to be Minnesota's reenactment of the "Throw Sum Mo" video. Instead, now I feel like it will be a long, slow reenactment of "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye (To Yesterday)".
In case you live in a cave, Teddy Bridgewater, Minnesota's starting quarterback, had his lower leg snapped like a pretzel. He is done for the season, and his career may be over. The Vikings were completely unprepared to lose their leader and are now stuck with Shaun Hill under center. Hill is a 36-year-old journeyman that is on his third team in four years and has exactly eight starts since 2011.
The Vikings still have the potential to make a run at the postseason, though any Super Bowl dreams have been smothered. Minnesota has one of the toughest, meanest defenses in football. Their statistics looked mediocre (No. 13 total defense, No. 12 pass defense, No. 17 rush defense). But they were in the Top 5 in points allowed and the Top 10 in both sacks and turnovers. The group has multiple Pro Bowl talents at all three levels.
Offensively, the pieces are in place where Hill may not have to do too much for the Vikings to win games. Adrian Peterson, even at age 31, may still have one more monster season in him. The receiving corps is extremely underrated, especially if Laquon Treadwell is the real deal. And the offensive line could be even better than the one that pounded away for the league's No. 4 rush offense last season.
The biggest key for the Vikings will be getting over the mental hurdle of watching their hopes and dreams crushed in a twisted mass of tendons and bones. Bridgewater was their leader, and they had faith in him. He is gone. But Minnesota won 11 games last year despite having the league's No. 31 pass offense and throwing the fewest attempts in the game. All is not lost.
The Vikings number opened at 9.5 but is now off the board. When the books replace it I expect a number around 8.0 or 8.5. I still have faith in this team to get to 10 wins because they play a tried-and-true style of football. I would hit them 'over'.
