2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Well, that didn't take long.
Jim Harbaugh was hailed as a football Messiah two years ago when it was announced that he was taking over at his alma mater. But even the most optimistic of Wolverine fan would have to admit that expecting Michigan compete for a National Championship in Year 2 would be a little rash. Yet here they are, entering the fall as one of the odds-on favorites to win it all.
Michigan went 10-3 in Harbaugh's first season, and they have a load of starters back. They have eight alone on offense, and their offensive line is one of the most veteran units in the nation. They have two three-year starters and two four-year starters up front. This group should be able push around just about every defense they face. That's crucial to Harbaugh's physical approach to the game, and Michigan should be able to execute it in spades.
The biggest question mark is at quarterback, where Houston transfer John O'Korn will replace last year's transfer spot starter, Jake Rudock.
Defensively, the Wolverines had one of the best groups in the country last year. At one point Michigan threw an amazing three straight shutouts! They lose their three leading tacklers. But six starters are back, and Michigan will begin the season with eight seniors in their lineup.
The Wolverines have a schedule that's tailor-made for a monster season. They open the year with five - FIVE! - straight home games, and they only leave the state of Michigan once before mid-November. Yes, Michigan has to face its three toughest opponents (Iowa, Michigan State and Ohio State) on the road. But the Wolverines shouldn't be more than a three-point underdog in any of those contests, and I think they will win at least two of them.
Michigan enters the year with a lot of momentum. And that early-season homestand should lead to even more. Just like the running games that Harbaugh's teams are known for, once that ball gets rolling down hill it should be tough to stop. I think Michigan is one of the best teams in the country. They won't be upset, and I see them winning at least two of their three big road games. I think Michigan will win the Big Ten, and this team is a national title contender.
