2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
I have bad news for Miami football fans and Axl Rose: the 80s are never coming back.
I feel that every fall for the past 10 years I have been forced to listen to and read stories declaring that this is the year that Miami football is BACK! Alas, it is always sound and fury, and the Hurricanes have not had double-digit wins in a season since 2003.
Enter Mark Richt.
Richt was ousted after 15 distinguished seasons with Georgia. He obviously found a soft landing spot, though, and could be the perfect man to lead Miami back to national relevance. Richt brought in Mississippi State's talented defensive coordinator, Manny Diaz, and he has a strong foundation of talent to build on in South Beach.
Quarterback Brad Kaaya is an outstanding player. He's been overshadowed by some of the other big guns in the ACC, but Kaaya is as good as any of them. Miami has all five offensive line starters back, and running back Joe Yearby could be poised for a breakout season. The key will be talent emerging at receiver, and if that happens this offense could be lethal.
Defensively, Miami always manages to find talent. The key will be for Diaz to shape it into a disciplined, physical, effective group closer to what the 'Canes fielded in 2009 (22.2 points per game allowed), 2010 (20.7) and 2011 (20.1). Miami recruits well and always has talent on this side of the ball. So the onus will be on Diaz to mold it into something.
A key for Miami is the early schedule. They should destroy their first three opponents, and that will give them a load of confidence in Richt and his staff. Then they get two weeks to prepare for Georgia Tech's option (which Richt faced once a year at UGA) before two home games against rival Florida State and then North Carolina.
There's a load of indicators pointing toward Miami having a big season. I think Richt was a brilliant hire, and with Kaaya he has a stud quarterback to hold the reigns. I have Miami getting to nine wins this year, and they will be a major factor in the ACC. Play this team 'over', and do it quickly before this number moves - because it will.
