When football fans think of the Miami Dolphins they generally think of a proud, successful, historic franchise. This is the franchise of Shula and Marino, of 17-0 and back-to-back Super Bowls. However, with just one winning season in 10 years, the Dolphins are now the epitome of "also-ran".

Adam Gase becomes the latest Savior of South Beach. Gase is Miami's sixth coach - not counting two interim coaches - in 13 seasons. This is the former offensive coordinator's first head job, and he will be tasked with rebuilding a hodgepodge of a roster that has been a perpetual underachiever.

Gase's first task will be fixing an offense that has finished No. 26 or below in scoring and total yards in three of the past four seasons. Not coincidentally, Ryan Tannehill has been under center for all four of those pathetic seasons. Gase has a reputation as a quarterback whisperer. But I feel like someone simply needs to yell in Gase's ear that, "Hey, this guy sucks!"

Miami's defense has actually been a major overachiever most of the past five seasons. From 2011-2013 they finished in the Top 10 in points allowed despite finishing the bottom half of the league in total defense. The levy finally broke the past two seasons, with the Dolphins clocking the league's No. 20 and No. 19 scoring defense, respectively.

Nowadays the NFL rewards skill in the passing game, on both sides of the ball. Unfortunately, that is where the Dolphins are at their weakest. Miami's secondary has train wreck potential, and their receiving corps is young and inconsistent. Gase needs to address these areas, as well as the quarterback, before this organization will make any headway.

Like the rest of the AFC East, the Dolphins have an incredibly challenging schedule. A four-game homestand between Weeks 5-9 is balanced out by five road games in seven weeks in November and December. Miami will be competitive, but erratic. I can see a scenario where they claw their way to seven wins. But there are way too many question marks to confidently predict this team can get to .500.
