Memphis is hoping that the loss of quarterback Paxton Lynch and coach Justin Fuente doesn't signal the swift and sudden return of the Tigers program to national irrelevance. Memphis is just a year removed from a banner season in which the Tigers beat Mississippi and had a four-week cup of coffee in the Top 25. But they now face the tall order of maintaining momentum under a new regime.

Remember: this is a Memphis team that went just 12-48 from 2009 through 2013. So these guys aren't exactly used to handling success. It would have to be considered a momentous achievement if new coach Mike Norvell, who was the offensive coordinator at Arizona State for the past four seasons, can get this team back to a bowl game.

I'm not counting on it.

The Tigers have lost a load of talent over the past two offseasons. Two years ago they had one of the nation's better defenses, and Lynch was a rare NFL-caliber player for this offense. This team is still super athletic, and there are a lot of upperclassmen dotting the two-deep. But there's no telling how they are going to adjust to the new coaching staff. The Tigers are learning new systems on both sides of the ball, and they are doing so without the leaders from last year's offense and defense.

Memphis's early-season schedule is favorable enough; they open at home against a cupcake and then have a bye week to prepare for two more home games against rebuilding teams. But the late-season schedule is rough and I think that this team is going to run out of steam. I'm playing the Tigers 'under' as I don't see them making it back to a bowl game.
