Professional golf's first Major of the year tees off this Thursday with first-round action in the 2016 Masters at Augusta National Golf Course. Picking an outright winner in a tournament filled with the best golfers in the world can be a daunting task, but Bovada has offered up a pair of player props that gives you the option of grouping together the 'best of the best' in an effort cash in on one of golf's most popular betting events.
I have broken down the groupings for each of these special Masters player props to try and find the best value in the numbers.
Group 1- Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson and Jason Day vs The Field
If you go to Bovada's straight up betting board to win this year's Masters you would find Jason Day as the favorite at +650 betting odds followed by Rory McIlroy at +800, Jordan Spieth at +900 and Bubba Watson next on the list at +1000.
The special player prop odds that one of the four golfers in this group wins the Masters is set at +130, while a bet against this group by going with the rest of the field has a moneyline of -170.
This is definitely a powerful group of heavy hitters in the world of golf, and it is always a plus when you have the winners of three or the last four Masters on this list. Watson won the Masters in 2012 and 2013, and Spieth broke through with his first Green Jacket last year. As an added plus, you know that McIlroy will be highly motivated to add this Major title to the list to finally complete a career Grand Slam.
Current form is another big factor, and you have to love the fact that Day is coming off a recent victory in this year's Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill just a few weeks ago. He is currently ranked first in the World Rankings and second on both the money list and the FedEx Cup points list.
This player prop bet is still a pretty big tease because Bovada knows that the betting public is probably going to jump all over this group verses the field and it also knows that the odds are still very much in the book's favor. That being said, I am still taking the bait with a bet on the favorable +130 moneyline.
Group 2- Adam Scott, Jason Day, Ricky Fowler and Phil Mickelson vs. The Field
Moving down Bovada's list of odds to win the 2016 Masters, Scott's betting odds sit at +1100, followed by Fowler and Mickelson at +1600.
The prop bet odds for this foursome against the field have been set at +210, and the moneyline that someone else from the field wins this tournament are set at -285.
The first thing you need to remember about this player prop is that McIlroy, Spieth and Watson are now considered part of the field. That takes away some significant value in the betting odds for this group.
Scott is ranked first on the money list with five Top-5 finishes in nine events this season, including back-to-back victories in the Honda Classic and the World Golf Championship. We already know what Day brings to the table.
When it comes to Fowler, he now holds the dubious distinction of being one of the best golfers in the world to never win a Major. I am heavily discounting the value of Mickelson in this group. Granted he has already won three green jackets, but when it comes to betting on golf, older big-name players are heavily over-valued on name recognition alone.
We know that the young studs in this group are going to be gunning for their first career green jacket, but the fact that Day has finished outside the Top 20 in his last two Masters and Fowler has yet to win any Major works against them this week.
Scott would have to be considered a seasoned veteran at 35 years old, but he has been a non-factor in his last two trips around Augusta. You already know how I feel about Mickelson, so I would have to lean towards betting the field in this player prop despite the risk on the -285 moneyline odds.
