2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'

Over the last 10 years Les Miles has won 101 games as the head coach of the LSU Tigers. Most programs would kill for that level of success. But you get the feeling that this might be a now-or-never year for Miles, who has been facing increasing calls for his ouster from Baton Rouge over the past several seasons. LSU is one of the most talented, most experienced teams in the country, and Miles will try to get them back in the national title picture for the first time since 2011.

LSU is stacked on offense. They will lean on one of the Heisman Trophy favorites, Leonard Fournette, and LSU's Top 10 rushing offense. They also have a three-year starter at quarterback (Brandon Harris) and two three-year starters at receiver (Travin Dural and Malachi Dupre). LSU also has three starters back along their massive offensive line. And if they can get more out of Harris, who is really not a very good QB, then this offense should be one of the best of the decade for the Tigers.

The Tigers are even more loaded on defense with nine returning starters. LSU also brought in a new defensive coordinator, luring Dave Aranda away from Wisconsin, and they should greatly improve their No. 42 scoring defense rating from last year. The 24.3 points per game allowed were about a touchdown more than the 2014 defense, and the most a Miles team has allowed in over seven years. But they will lean on seven seniors and four three-year starters to get it done on this side of the ball.

The Tigers had a cupcake schedule last season and still went only 9-3. They have another relatively easy slate this season, with just four true road games. LSU has to take on Wisconsin in the Badgers' backyard (Green Bay) to open the season. But LSU only has two other road games between Sept. 9 and Nov. 9. The Tigers get their crucial game against Alabama at home, and I don't see this team losing a game in Death Valley this year.

I don't think LSU will go undefeated. I know a lot of people are predicting that this team will make it into the playoffs. And I think they will beat Alabama and take the West. But LSU has really struggled on the road the last four seasons, going just 8-8 away from home. And the four SEC teams they play on the road this year aren't pushovers. One of those four teams will jump up and bite the Tigers. But since I have LSU beating Alabama, I have a hard time finding three other losses, which is what it would take for this bet to go 'under'. So if I had to, I would actually play LSU 'over' and hope they live up to their pedigree.
