2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
It has been two straight heartbreaking years for Kentucky football. Each of the past two seasons they've come up just one win short of bowl eligibility, and the Wildcats enter 2016 hoping to claim their first postseason invitation since 2010.
I felt like Kentucky was one of the bigger disappointments in the Southeast last year. They got off to a 4-1 start, with the lone loss a heartbreaker against Florida. But they lost another tight game at home to middling Auburn before getting blown out three straight games against Miss State, Tennessee and Georgia (combined score: 121-40). Kentucky blew a game at Vanderbilt and then choked away a 24-7 lead, at home, against rival Louisville in the final game of the season. When the dust settled Kentucky had gone just 3-9 against the spread.
Mark Stoops welcomes back most of his offense this fall. He does need to replace quarterback Patrick Towles, but Towles was not any good last year, so they should be better under center. All of their leading rushers and leading receivers are back, along with four returning line starters. As such, this group should outperform last year's modest 24.7 points per game.
The problems for this team are going to be on defense. Kentucky lost seven of its top eight tacklers. And it's not as if they were some stud unit last year. In fact, last season was the first time in four years that they surrendered fewer than 30 points per game. I think things are going to get worse before they get better. And how Stoops plugs holes on that side will determine what they do this season.
Kentucky reminds me a little bit of Indiana. The Hoosiers went two or three straight years where they kept getting close, and getting close and getting close to an elusive bowl bid. Then finally they broke through and got to six wins last year. I really think Kentucky can do the same this year.
The Wildcats should claim three wins from their nonconference slate. They could also be favored at home against South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Kentucky gets to host Mississippi State as well, and I think they are capable of springing an upset against a team like Florida or rival Louisville. I correctly predicted Kentucky 'under' last year. But this time I'm going the other way. I think somehow they will get their six wins and get to a bowl game. I'd play 'over'.
