2016 Season Win Total Pick: 'Over'

With a season win total of 9.5, I can't exactly say that the Chiefs are underrated heading into the season. And even the most optimistic of Kansas City fan would acknowledge that this team doesn't quite have the look of a Super Bowl contender. Yet despite that I still feel like Kansas City's brain trust of Andy Reid and Alex Smith still don't get the credit they deserve.

Kansas City has beaten its season win total all three years that Reid has been at Arrowhead while compiling a 31-17 regular-season record. Reid has gone 161-110 in his 18-year head coaching career, winning nearly 60 percent of his games for the past two decades, yet I still feel as if he has more detractors than fans.

The same can be said for Smith, who has a career record of 68-52 as a starter. That includes his first five years in San Francisco in which the entire 49ers organization was a sloppy, disorganized mess. Smith has actually gone 49-21 as a starter the last five seasons, with his teams making the postseason every year but one.

Smith and the Chiefs offense is quietly competent, with Jeremy Maclin and Travis Kelce supplying the big-play punch in the passing game. Jamaal Charles is struggling to work his way back from a knee injury that shortened his 2015 season. But the Chiefs have several starter-quality backups ready to carry the load while Charles gets sorted out.

Defensively, Kansas City still boasts one of the best linebacking groups in football. Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali are multiple Pro Bowlers. And if Justin Houston can come back at midseason from an ACL injury then the Chiefs defense will again be a force. Safety Eric Berry continues his inspirational comeback and is the stabilizing force with in a talented young secondary. Berry will need to be healthy and effective, though, because if the Chiefs defense has a weakness it is at safety.

The Chiefs have a very manageable schedule with crossover games against the erratic NFC South and the feeble AFC South. A stretch of three road games in four weeks in late November will be daunting. But the Chiefs close the season with three of their final four games at home. Kansas City's offensive and defensive yards per point last year both fall within a range that predicts a major regression and a season below .500. But in my opinion there is no upside in betting against Reid and Smith. I would stay away from this number altogether. But if you forced a wager, I would go 'over'.
