This season begins a new era of Georgia football. Mark Richt was let go and former Alabama co-defensive coordinator, and Georgia alum, Kirby Smart was brought in to hopefully get the Bulldogs over the hump and competing for national titles. Richt had gone 94-38 over the last 10 years. Apparently that wasn't good enough. So while Smart will enjoy a grace period, the bar is set pretty high.
Smart was able to convince Jacob Eason, the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the country, to honor his commitment to the Bulldogs. Smart's first tough decision as head man will be deciding between the young, talented Eason or going with the steady, limited hands of last year's starter, senior Greyson Lambert.
Whoever is named the starter will do a lot of handing off. Georgia has a Heisman candidate in running back Nick Chubb, who missed most of last year with an injury. But his backup is Sony Michel, who rushed for 1,200 yards and a 5.3 average in Chubb's absence. A lot of credit goes to Georgia's powerful offensive line, which has three starters back (including three-year starters center Brandon Kublanow and guard Greg Pyke).
Smart gets (and takes) a lot of credit for the success of Alabama's defense over the past eight seasons. However, he hired Mel Tucker as his coordinator at Georgia. Tucker is a former Alabama assistant and was a defensive coordinator for six years in the NFL. Tucker was one of the worst NFL DC's I've ever seen and is generally clueless. We'll see if Georgia's seven returning starters and wealth of talent can overcome his incompetence, though.
Smart's quarterback decision will immediately be put to the test. If he goes with Eason then Georgia will have a first-year coach and a first-year quarterback at the helm when they play perhaps their four biggest games of the season. Georgia opens in nearby Atlanta against high-scoring North Carolina. They also have back-to-back September road games against very tough, talented Missouri and Ole Miss squads, followed by a huge home game against division favorite Tennessee.
I'm not a big fan of Smart's, and the jury is still very much out. Last year I correctly nailed the 'push' with UGA and said they would win nine regular-season games. I hate to do it, but I'm going to call for the same again this year! I think they will be 3-2 after their October meeting with the Vols. And after that I think they will go 6-1 down the stretch, falling to either Florida or Georgia Tech.
But if I'm wrong about this team I think it will be because they are better than I expect, not worse. And if they beat UNC in the opener they will have a great shot at getting to 10 wins.
