2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
Fresno State football could be becoming a cautionary tale for mid-major college football programs. Once a well-respected, will-play-anyone-anywhere team under Pat Hill, the Bulldogs have backslid in a major way the past two seasons. They are still trying to figure out life after Derek Carr (and Hill). And as I look at this team I don't see a lot of cause for optimism.
Fresno State has 12 returning starters this season, as opposed to just 10 last year. But they drop from 10 senior starters to just five this season and from five three-year starters to just one. Fresno State is likely going with a redshirt freshman quarterback and as many as 10 underclassmen starters. This really looks like a rebuilding year in coach Tim DeRuyter's fifth season.
The Bulldogs don't have any breathing room early in the season. Four of their first six games are on the road, and they don't have a bye week until mid-November. They host tough opponents like Tulsa, SDSU and Air Force, and I just don't see a lot of situations where Fresno State will be favored to win.
Fresno still has the expectations of a Mountain West powerhouse. But they don't have the talent. They should pick up a win here or there. But I don't see them pulling three upsets to get to four wins, assuming they take care of Sacramento State in Week 2. This is an easy 'under' call.
