2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'

I was bullish on Florida and Jim McElwain last season , and they didn't let me down, winning the SEC East while working their way up into a Top 10. The Gators came back to reality a bit late in the season, though, getting blown out in their final three games, losing to Florida State, Alabama and Michigan by a combined score of 97-24. Those ugly defeats kind of sapped UF of any momentum coming into this season.

McElwain was able to coax just enough offense out of last year's team to help out Florida's overwhelming defense. But they lost a lot of very good players on both sides of the ball and will need replacements to step up quickly if they want to be a factor in the East.

It starts at quarterback, where transfers Luke Del Rio (Oregon State) and Austin Appleby (Purdue) are in a battle for the starting spot. Florida is also replacing its top two rushers and top two receivers as well. And how things shake out on that side of the ball will impact a defense that is scrambling to replace star players Keanu Neal, Jon Bullard and Vernon Hargreaves.

But, again, this is Florida. This program is overflowing with top-level athletes, and I expect new stars to emerge. It will fall on McElwain, who I believe is primed to be a very good coach in the SEC, to get everyone on the same page.

Six of Florida's first eight games are in their home state. The two road games are at Tennessee, which is one of their biggest games of the year, and at Vanderbilt. After that they have perhaps their most important stretch, facing LSU and Missouri at home before taking on Georgia in Jacksonville.

I think this is another very good number from the sportsbooks. This Florida team is not as good as last year's group. But program continuity will give them a boost. I actually have this team at 8-4. I think they will win only one of their four big games (Tenn, LSU, UGA, FSU). But I also think they will be upset once. However, if I'm wrong I think it will be because this team overachieves, so I'll pull the trigger on the 'over'.
