The biggest event of the summer sports schedule won't even be played in the United State.
The UEFA Euro 2016 Soccer Championship is one of the most prestigious international soccer tournaments in the world. This year's Euro 2016 will take place from June 10 to July 10 in France and features teams from 16 of the most futbol-crazed countries on the planet.
For the uninitiated, think of the Euro 2016 as a mini-World Cup. Only instead of featuring 32 of the best teams from all over the planet it is simply the 24 best teams from the European nations.
The formats for the World Cup and the Euro 2016 are similar. Both tournaments feature teams broken down into four-team groups. In the World Cup there are eight groups. In the Euro there are six. The teams in those groups play a round robin against one another to determine who advances to the next stage.
The Knockout Stage is a 16-team mini-tournament comprised of six group winners, six group second-place finishers, and then the top four third-place finishers. There are a series of tiebreakers to determine positioning.
This tournament features most of the best players and the best national teams in the world. However, not everything is as it seems in these matches. These top players just finished up their respective grueling leagues a few weeks ago. Since players on these national teams all play on different club teams, finding chemistry and also avoiding fatigue are two key factors as to who will win this tournament.
Winning the Euro is a great source of pride for these teams, though, so everyone should go all out. Host France is one of the favorites to win this tournament at +300. Defending World Cup champions Germany are also posted at +300. Spain (+550), England (+800) and Belgium (+1000) round out the top five.
Spain is the two-time defending Euro champion. In 2012 they became the first team to ever win back-to-back European championships.
Several Doc's Sports handicappers - Doc's Sports,Robert Ferringo, Raphael Esparza, Indian Cowboy and Alan Harris - will be releasing selections on these matches all summer long. Release times for picks are at 11:30 a.m. EST on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with selections for multiple days available with each release.
