2015 Record: 4-12
2016 Las Vegas Season Win Total: 9.5
2016 Season Win Total Prediction: 'Under'
The fun thing about Dallas is that as long as we are still in the Jason Garrett-Tony Romo Era I don't have to do much scouting on this team. We all know who the Cowboys are. We've seen them. We've seen them perform (and fail) in all manner of situation over the last few years as A merica's (Mediocre) Team has been forced down our throats in big, nationally-televised games year after year.
The Cowboys are losers, pure and simple. They are perpetually one of the most overrated and overvalued teams in the NFL, and this year is no exception.
Last year's 4-12 disaster has been brushed off as an injury-fueled aberration. Tony Romo played in only four games (in which the Cowboys went 3-1) before fracturing his collarbone and missing the rest of the season. So it is easy to dismiss last year, which followed their 12-4 campaign in 2014, as kind of a fluke.
But the reality is that 2014 was the fluke. Dallas has posted only one winning season in six years with Garrett and Romo at the helm. One. They are 40-58 against the spread (41%) since the start of the 2010 season, and this group has been one of the biggest money burners in the sport. I see no reason why this year won't be the same, with a litany of excuses coming after another season of Dallas underachievement.
Yes, Dallas still has enough offensive talent that you hesitate to bet against them. Although Romo will find a way to choke in a big spot, the guy is still a pretty strong quarterback. It helps that he works behind the best offensive line in football. Their weapons in the passing game are also second-to-none, with Dez Bryant, Jason Witten, Terrance Williams and Cole Beasley forming one of the two or three best corps in football. Also, I think Alfred Morris is going to have a monster season.
The main problems are on defense. The Cowboys pass rush is nonexistent, and three of their best defenders will serve suspensions through the first month of the season. The Dallas linebacking corps is pretty terrible and will again be one of the worst in football once Sean Lee inevitably gets hurt. I do like the Dallas secondary. But they need to keep Orlando Scandrick healthy; they desperately missed his leadership and nastiness when he went down last year.
Dallas has an opportunity for a strong open and close to the season. I expect a 3-1 start and they should be solid favorites in their final three games. That is six wins right there, meaning they would only need to go 4-5 in the rest of their games to clear this bar. I actually think Dallas could - and should - go 10-6 this year. But there is no way that I would bet it that way. This organization has only won 10 or more games four times in the last 15 years. If they do it this year, great. But I'm not getting burned by these losers.
