I cannot fathom how a college football team can average less than 18 points per game for an entire season. Not in the way the sport is presently constituted, where teams seemingly fall out of bed and score 35 points and 51-45 shootouts are the rule rather than the exception.

However, the Connecticut Huskies have put on a breathtaking display of offensive ineptitude so far this decade. They've averaged fewer than 18 points per game in each of the last two seasons and three of the last four. Over their last 25 games (two seasons) the Huskies have averaged just 16.4 points per game! And over the last five years, while fielding some of the worst quarterbacks I've ever seen, Connecticut has mustered just 19 points per game.

Needless to say, if Connecticut wants to improve on last year's surprising bowl game appearance and top their 6-7 record they will need to improve on that side of the football. The Huskies have 10 starters back, including three-year-starter and not-total-incompetent quarterback Bryant Shirreffs. The junior has his two top rushers and five top receivers, along with a veteran offensive line, to work with.

Defensively, the Huskies were one of the nation's best stop units last year. The D's 19.6 points allowed is even more impressive considering what little help they received from the offense. UConn lost leading tackler Andrew Adams but boasts an experienced secondary and an all-upperclassman starting 11.

Connecticut has a tough start to the season after they take care of cupcake Maine. The Huskies square off with Navy, Virginia, Syracuse, Houston and Cincinnati in five straight weeks. Fortunately, three of those games are at home, and both UVA and SU are breaking in new coaches and systems. How the Huskies perform there will write the story of their season.

It's all about offense with this team. Score points - win games; it's pretty simple. The Huskies doubled their season win total last year. They won't show that level of improvement this season. But if they win one of their home games against Virginia, Syracuse or Cincinnati and then split with East Carolina and Temple then I think this team will get to exactly six wins and reach another bowl game.
