So close, yet so far away. Perpetual bridesmaid Clemson nearly stole the veil, bouquet and rings in the National Championship Game while upsetting Alabama. But the Tigers came up one quarter and five points short of winning the title last January. And now they will attempt to work their way back into the playoffs and take another shot at winning it all.

Junior quarterback DeShaun Watson is considered the best player in college football and the Heisman frontrunner. His numbers last year - over 5,200 all-purpose yards and 47 touchdowns - speak for themselves, and he is the triggerman for an offense that scored nearly 40 points per game. Leading receiver Artavis Scott and underrated star running back Wayne Gallman both return, as does four-year starting tight end Jordan Leggett, to give Watson ample weapons.

The question marks for the Tigers are all on the defensive side of the ball. But then again, that was the case last year. The 2014 defense was one of the best in school history, and Clemson entered last season with just three returning starters. Well, this year they have just three starters back, and five of their top six tacklers are gone. How that group comes together will determine if this team is very good or potentially great.

Clemson has been a profitable group for bettors the last five seasons (39-29 ATS) despite consistently being ranked in the Top 15. But I feel like last season's outstanding run, along with having a Heisman candidate, will have sucked out all of the value out of betting on this group.

The Tigers have a pretty favorable schedule through the first two months of the year, sans road tests at Auburn to open the year and at Boston College on a Friday night. Also, the Tigers have to go to Florida State for the game that will likely decide the Atlantic crown. Over the last four years Clemson has not been the type of team to play down to its competition (in stark contrast to the 20 years prior). But the Tigers have a big target on their chests, and there are several groups ready to knock them off.

Clemson's season win total is one of the highest in the country. They have the leeway to lose one game and still beat the number, but one upset would sink their season. Clemson hasn't lost to a team outside of the Top 25 since falling at Georgia Tech in 2011. But I think that they will get tripped up sometime in September or October, and I believe they will lose at Florida State. Clemson is still loaded. But I would play this number 'under' this season after correctly nailing the 'over' with them last season.
