2016 Season Win Total Prediction: 'Under'

Prior to training camp I thought the Bears might be a little undervalued heading into this season. They won just six games against a hellacious schedule last season. But Chicago was scrappy and a tough and suffered six losses by six points or fewer. With some subtle improvements and in Year 2 of the new coaching regime, I felt as if the Bears were a bit better than people realized.

Then I saw them play. And that's when I realized that they probably overachieved to get to six wins in 2015 and they could be worse this time around.

Last season John Fox seemed to bring an air of stability to a franchise that has seemingly made the wrong choice - be it in the draft, with coaches, or with free agents - every single time they've been presented with an option for the last 10 years. I have confidence in Fox's ability to build this team in the long-term. But in the short term things could get worse before they get better.

Chicago's roster is full of holes. They don't really have a running back. Other than Alshon Jeffery, the rest of their receiving corps is awful. The offensive line has been in decline. On defense, their secondary is one of the worst in football. The front seven, particularly the linebackers, are a definite strength. But that's not nearly enough to make up for the other gaping chasms.

Then there's Jay Cutler.

Jay Cutler has been the worst quarterback to bet on in the NFL over the last 25 years, with a minimum of 64 starts. Cutler has gone 54-78-3 against the spread in his career as a starter. That's a 60 percent loss rate for nearly 10 years! Betting against Jay Cutler has been the best gambling system in football.

Cutler is a natural loser. He is the anti-leader, and his total lack of charisma and heart are still the biggest anchor on this team. With a better, less turnover-prone leader maybe the Bears would be able to overachieve again this season. But once things start to go sideways for this overmatched roster you know Cutler's I-don't-give-a-shit attitude will be in full force, helping to drown any hopes of improvement for this squad.
