2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'

I was driving the Cal bandwagon last season, and I feel like I got my money's worth. The Golden Bears started 5-0 and worked their way into the Top 25 for the first time in years, won eight games - compared to just nine wins the three prior seasons- and blew out Air Force in a bowl game.

This year Cal will have to replace No. 1 overall draft pick Jared Goff. They will benefit from Texas Tech transfer Davis Webb, who I like. But more important than Goff's loss is the departure of offensive coordinator Tony Franklin (MTSU). Cal also lost its top six - SIX - receivers from last season and will be reworking an offense that scored nearly 40 points per game each of the past two seasons.

The news isn't any better on defense as five of their top six players are gone. On the whole, Cal has just nine returning starters back this season (versus 17 last year) and drop from 10 three-year starters to just five this fall.

Sonny Dykes is in his fourth season and is now working with all of his own recruits. Dykes has just a 36-38 career record, but everyone knows he is a very talented coach. That belief is going to be tested this year. Despite the lack of talent and experience, I don't know if Dykes will get away with another 1-11 (or comparable) rebuilding season like the team endured in his first season.

Cal opens the season on Aug. 27 in Australia against Hawaii. They will play just two home games before mid-October, and the Bears will likely be home dogs against Texas and Utah. The good news is that this young team will get to close the season with four of their last six games in Berkley. The bad news is that they likely won't win any of those games.

I think this is going to be an ugly season for Cal. All their easiest games - none of which are really that easy - are on the road (SDSU, ASU and Oregon State). These guys might not win a home game all season, and lack of depth and strength could crush them in a brutal Pac-12 this year. This is an easy 'under' call.
