2016 Season Win Total Prediction: 'Under'

Big, bad, blustery buffoon Rex Ryan is ready for Phase 2 of his plan to demolish hope, decency and disciplined football in Upstate New York. With both arrogance and incompetence in equal, and ample, supply, Ryan is proving again to be the latest example of the Peter Principal in action in the NFL.

Buffalo will be an extremely dangerous team for NFL bettors this fall. They are not bereft of talent. Tyrod Taylor is an exciting and talented young quarterback. LeSean McCoy, Charles Clay and Kyle Williams are among the best at their positions. The Bills are strong in the trenches, and their secondary is loaded.

But it all comes back to Ryan. In two years he dismantled a Top 5 defense, instead replacing it with a shaky 3-4 alignment and then spending the past two seasons scrambling to find players to fit his new system. Buffalo's defense, which had ranked in the Top 10 in total yards in 2013 and 2014, tumbled to No. 19 last year. And as if that wasn't enough, Ryan hired one of the worst defensive coordinators of the last quarter century, slovenly brother Rob, to help him complete the desecration.

This preseason has been a circus for the Bills. They've had a slew of injuries. They've had one of their best players (Marcel Dareus) leave the team for rehab. They've had to cut key players from last year's team for being overweight and out of shape. This team doesn't appear to be any more cohesive than the unit that bumbled its way to .500 last season.

The biggest problem for the Bills this year is that their roster has not improved, but their schedule has gotten significantly more difficult. Last year they crossed over against two of the worst divisions in football, the AFC South and NFC East. This year they must face two of the best: the AFC North and the NFC West. They have a brutal road schedule that includes three cross-country flights as well as trips to Baltimore, New England and Cincinnati.

The Bills are going to pull a couple of upsets this year. But there is no way that I trust this team to make a run in the AFC East. Rex Ryan hasn't finished above .500 in any of his last five seasons, compiling a dopey 34-46 record in that stretch. This could and should be his final stop. This is an easy 'under' call.
