2016 Season Win Total Prediction: 'Over'

Boston College is looking to bounce back from a dreadful 2015 campaign that saw them go winless in ACC play. The Eagles won just three games last year despite fielding maybe the best defense in the country. With seven starters back on that dominating stop unit, along with some key additions on offense, the Eagles are looking to vault themselves into the ACC Atlantic race.

The Eagles defense has lost a load of talent the past two seasons and will be without two of its top three tacklers from last year. However, they have 17 members of their defensive two-deep back along with some promising freshmen. B.C. allowed just 254 yards per game (No. 1 in the country) and just 15.3 points per outing. That includes holding high-flying Clemson (34 points), Florida State (14) and Notre Dame (19) below their averages.

Boston College will welcome back Jon Hillman, a promising running back that was lost after two games last season. The Eagles also added Kentucky transfer quarterback Patrick Towles. Towles isn't very good. He completed around 57 percent of his passes with 23 touchdowns and 23 interceptions of his last two seasons at UK. But he's better than anything B.C. had to work with as the Eagles scored just 17.2 points per game last year.

The sportsbooks and certain college football handicappers love the Eagles this season. They haven't won over seven games in the regular season since 2009, but that's where this year's bar is set. Their nonconference schedule should get them halfway there. But the Eagles will still need to find a way to win more than half of their ACC games. Again, that's something they haven't done in seven years.

I'm not fully buying the Eagles. This team was really competitive last year; even against Top 10 teams. But they didn't win any of those games. They will certainly be better this season, and I absolutely have them getting back to a bowl game. But I think they get to seven games, not past it. Right now the juice on the 'over' is at +130 and +140 at most sportsbooks (vs. -170 or -180 on the 'under'). As a result, if I had to pick a side I'd play on the positive juice and go 'over'. But I have this team at 7-5 and wouldn't touch this number.
