2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
The shiny veneer of Boise State's sophomore season in the Mountain West glossed over what was, in actuality, a disappointing season for the Broncos. Boise State brought back 17 starters from the 2014 squad that went 12-2. But the Broncos managed just one impressive win, an emotional season opener against Wa shington, while taking some ugly losses, including a shocking home loss to New Mexico as a 31-point favorite.
Boise State won just eight regular season games last year. Despite that they enter this fall as Mountain West co-favorites with San Diego State, and their Las Vegas season win total is one of the highest in the country.
If there was a silver lining to Boise State's 2015 campaign it would be the discovery of quarterback Brett Rypien. Rypien, whose uncle Mark was a Super Bowl champion with the Redskins, was a first-team all-league player and the Mountain West Freshman of the Year. Last year's leading rusher, Jeremy McNichols (1,337 yards), and leading receiver, Tom Sperbeck (1,412 yards), will support Rypien. Add in a trio of three-year starters along the offensive line and Boise should top 40 points per game for the first time since 2011.
There is a lot of turnover on defense, though. Boise State lost six starters and eight of their top 13 tacklers. They do have excellent linebackers in four-year starters Ben Weaver and Tanner Vallejo. But they have an entirely new defensive line and will be hard-pressed to top last year's 33 team sacks.
Boise State's schedule is challenging but not insurmountable. They take on two Pac-12 foes in the first month (Washington State and Oregon State), and they have a Thursday night game in October against BYU. But two of those three games are at home, and they will likely be favored in all 12 of their regular season games.
Boise State showed it wasn't immune to being upset, dumping three games as a favorite of nine points or more last year. But that might serve as a wake-up call for this program. They get their toughest opponents on the Smurf Turf, and the Broncos know they need to be at their best in MWC play if they want to set up a showdown with defending champion San Diego State in the title game. Boise State will lose once this year. But I don't think they fall twice. I'd play 'over'.
