The Basic Strategy Teaser seemingly can do no wrong. The system produced its second 3-0 week in three weeks and now holds a record of 8-1. Pittsburgh was able to dismantle the Jets at home on the back of four touchdown passes by Ben Roethlisberger. Two of those were to Sammie Coates, who had a breakout game, going for six catches, 139 yards and two touchdowns. Buffalo travelled across the country to take care of business against the Rams, who couldn't get much going offensively. LeSean McCoy ran for 150 yards and Tyrod Taylor threw for two touchdowns. This was a huge win for the Bills, who are looking to get themselves into a playoff position. And lastly, everyone's favorite rookie tandem of Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott proved once again that they are the real deal. Prescott threw for 227 yards and a touchdown while completing 75 percent of his passes. Elliott ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns, and none were better than his 60-yard scamper in the third quarter.
Week 6 of the NFL season is going to be a good one. There are several very attractive games that feature teams that people either love or love to hate. The 4-1 Cowboys travel to Lambeau Field to take on the 3-1 Packers. If Dallas can pull off this upset, ( currently +3.5) they will put the league on notice and I fully expect their Super Bowl futures to drop quite a bit. Another juicy matchup has Atlanta, fresh off a 23-16 win over the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos, traveling to Seattle to play a rested and healthy Seahawks team. The Seahawks are currently 5.5-point favourites, and I believe that line should be a tad higher. The final intriguing game of the week takes place at FedEx Field between the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles. Nothing more needs to be said about this matchup except for the fact that it's a classic NFC showdown in a division where the unexpected always happens.
In this article I will be giving you teams that I think will be the most attractive when teasing the spread either up or down six points. This is called the "Basic Strategy Teaser". A basic strategy teaser is a two-team, six-point teaser that uses the power of NFL key numbers, which are the most common margins of victory, to move certain spreads around the three- and seven-point mark.
This week's action has five NFL games that qualify with a mix of favorites and underdogs being teased into a more appealing position. I will give you my top three choices. All lines are courtesy of GT Bets.
New York Jets @ Arizona Cardinals
Spread: Cardinals -8
Six-Point Teaser: Cardinals -2
At this point in the season, these teams are who we think they are. The Jets are a turnover machine with a very poor defense compared to past seasons. The Cardinals, on the other hand, have been very poor offensively, and it has cost them two games (losses vs. NE and LA). Fortunately for Cardinals fans, the team expects to have Carson Palmer under center and he could be in for a big game this week. The Jets' rank last in average yards per pass (9.2) and are tied for second-to-last in passing yards per game (302). This is a recipe for success given the weapons Palmer still has at his disposal. Running back David Johnson has been a workhorse this year and has picked up his production from where he left of last season. Mix in Larry Fitzgerald and John Brown going up against a Darrelle Revis-less defense, and the Cardinals should feel great about their chances of getting back to .500.
Prognosis: If you are anything like me, you've been burned at least twice by the Cardinals this year. I understand the hesitation to lay eight points with a notoriously slow-starting team, but by employing the six-point teaser, the Cardinals will just need to win the game. They have the better players on both sides of the ball and the better coach. A two-point home favorite in a must-win game is too good to pass up.
Carolina Panthers @ New Orleans Saints
Spread: Saints +2.5
Six-Point Teaser: Saints +8.5
The Carolina Panthers have hit rock-bottom. They come into this game on the heels of an ugly home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Yes, they did start Derek Anderson. However, even with Cam Newton under center this year, the offense has looked very lethargic. The ground game has been the biggest issue for the Panthers. Newton, with 147 yards on 29 carries, is it's second-leading rusher, accounting for 24 percent of the team's rushing yards. That right there is a recipe for disaster. The Panthers do get a favorable matchup against a Saints defense that ranks in the bottom five, but that won't be enough for them to claim victory. The Saints are well rested off of their bye week and should have momentum on their side in the form of a 35-34 last-second win against San Diego.
Prognosis: We all saw how Carolina fared when they went into Atlanta and got lit up by the Falcons. I expect the same kind of result this week. Drew Brees is having a stellar season and at age 37 is averaging 317.3 yards per game, 66 percent completions with 10 touchdowns to just three picks. He should be able to pick apart this Panthers secondary - no longer with Josh Norman - and put up points on a team that is giving up 27 points per game on average. Take as many points as you can in this high-scoring shootout.
Cincinnati Bengals @ New England Patriots
Spread: Patriots -8.5
Six-Point Teaser: Patriots -2.5
There are several unwritten rules when it comes to gambling on sports. I believe No.3 on that list states "you must automatically bet on the Patriots at home when you can get them at less than three points". We were all witnesses last week to Tom Brady's glorified scrimmage against the Browns where he threw for 406 yards and three touchdowns. While he may not put up those exact numbers, he has all of his weapons available again for this game. Cincinnati is in its second road game in as many weeks and got carved up by a rookie QB and RB. The offense is sputtering and in no way, shape or form will they be able to keep up with a Patriots offense that is back to full strength.
Prognosis: I have yet to mentioned that the Bengals haven't won in New England since 1986. That's a long time. Mix in the fact that the Patriots rarely lose at home and you should be thanking the heavens that you can get the Brady-Belichick combo for under a field-goal.
The Rest:
Kansas City Chiefs @ Oakland Raiders
Spread: Raiders +2
Six-Point Teaser: Raiders +8
Jacksonville Jaguars @ Chicago Bears
Spread: Jaguars +2.5
Six-Point Teaser: Jaguars +8.5
