2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Push'

Last season I was one of the only handicappers and analysts in the country that wasn't buying into Auburn. They entered the year at No. 6 in the Top 25 and they were the overwhelming media choice to win the SEC. Instead, they needed OT to beat Jacksonville State in Week 2 - as a 47-point favorite - and then flopped their way to a 4-6 close to the campaign and last place in the SEC West. I easily hit with my 'under' play on their season win total.

Auburn is a bit of an unknown and somewhat of an X-Factor in the West this season. Gus Malzahn is just three years removed from winning a national title. But Auburn has seen its win total decrease each of the past two seasons, and this is a program that's lost at least five games six times in eight years.

The Tigers have an extremely similar makeup to last year's team. They have six starters back on each side of the ball, giving them 12 total starters back for the second straight season. They also have the same amount of senior starters (seven) and three-year starters (four) as last year.

The key will be finding cohesion among the offensive skill position players. Auburn will have a new quarterback, Florida State transfer John Franklin, and he'll have to gel with a new leading rusher and two new top receivers. The strength of the attack will be the offensive line, with three starters and five upperclassmen manning the front.

Kevin Steele becomes the fifth defensive coordinator in six years in Auburn. Despite the turnover, Auburn has been consistent on that side of the ball, allowing somewhere between 25-28 points per game the past seven seasons. Auburn lost five of its top eight tacklers, though, and is learning a new scheme.

I actually think that Auburn is a little underrated coming into the season. And we are going to find out a lot about this team in their opener against last year's national runner-up, Clemson. They have five home games to open the season and only leave the state three times this year. I really think this is a strong number for the Tigers. But I also wouldn't be surprised if they either beat it by two wins or came up two wins short. I will punt on this one and call for a 'push'.
