2016 Season Win Total Prediction: 'Over'

The Black Knights are routinely one of the worst college football teams in the country. Army is just 35-86 over the last decade and has enjoyed just one winning season during that stretch. In fact, Army's 2010 bowl appearance was their first since 1996. Considering there are about 1,000 bowl games each winter, that's a pretty sorry mark.

Will they get to a bowl game this year? Probably not. But Army should at least double last year's win total, and I am willing to predict that they will snap their 14-game losing streak to rival service academy Navy.

Army has 16 returning starters, compared to just eight last year, which is very rare for this program. They are still tiny along the offensive line (they don't have a lineman that weighs over 280), but they have thee starters back on a line that leads the way for their option attack.

Where Army has made, and should continue to make, strides is on defense. Nine starters are back from a pretty solid group that is in the third year of coach Jeff Monken's system. They have their seven top tacklers, and 13 of their top 15, back in the fold, and I think that they will surprise some people on this side of the ball.

Despite their youth, last year's Knights team lost seven games by a touchdown or less. That usually points to a turnaround the following season. I think the Black Knights have a chance to match last year's win total before the end of September. Add in two should-be wins over FCS opponents in the back half of the schedule, and my predicted win over Navy, and that would leave Army just one win shy of bowl eligibility for just the second time in 30 years.

I don't know that I'll predict a bowl game. But Army is going to be vastly improved. I think they will definitely get to five wins, something they've done just twice in a decade, and this is an easy 'over' call.
