2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
I think that 2016 is an important season in the Rich Rodriguez Era in Tucson. After surging to 10 wins in 2014, the Wildcats raised the bar of expectations coming into last season only to bumble their way to a 7-6 record bolstered by some wins (UTSA and New Mexico in their bowl game) that were nearly as embarrassing as some of the losses.
Rich Rod found a soft landing spot in the desert after his flameout in Michigan. But that doesn't mean that he can coast. Arizona has been one of the better programs in the Pac-12, and one down year doesn't mean that fans don't expect Rodriguez to win and compete for titles.
I think that Arizona is a vastly underrated team this season. They have five three-year starters on an offense that averaged 37.5 points per game last year. The Wildcats also have eight returning starters on defense, the side of the ball that vastly needs to improve under a new defensive coordinator.
Arizona starts the season with six of their first eight games in their home state. They have only four road games for the entire season. That's a huge benefit for a program that has gone 41-18 straight up at home over the last nine seasons (20-6 at home under Rodriguez). That's not to say that Arizona's schedule is easy; the Pac-12 has six or seven teams that will make a serious run at winning the title. But I would say it is favorable.
This season win total number is woefully low. I think we can already pencil in wins over Grambling, Hawaii, Colorado, Oregon State and Arizona State. That would mean Arizona would only have to spring a couple upsets to get to seven wins, and they host Washington, USC and Stanford. I have a lot of confidence in Rodriguez, and I think that this can be one of his better teams. These guys are a lot better than Arizona State, which has the same season win total, and I like Arizona 'over'.
