2016 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
Arizona State's 2015 campaign began in the Top 15 and finished below .500. Despite a host of returning talent, the Sun Devils couldn't build on back-to-back 10-win seasons and now enter Todd Graham's fifth season with a lot more questions than answers.
Graham's squad opened last year taking a 38-17 beat down from Texas A&M and seemingly never recovered. That loss slammed the door on their hype. But with just 10 returning starters, the Sun Devils enter the 2016 season with few expectations and none of the buzz they enjoyed last year.
This is clearly a rebuilding season. Arizona State will have a freshman quarterback, they lost three of their four top receivers, and the offensive line is one of the youngest in the Pac-12. Offense has been Graham's specialty, with ASU averaging at least 34 points in each of his first four seasons.
On defense, Arizona State is still a boom-or-bust unit. They sell out on stopping the run and blitzing the quarterback. Last year it didn't work as ASU finished No. 99 in scoring defense and No. 127 in pass defense. ASU has only three senior defensive starters and just two three-year starters. They also lost seven of their top 15 tacklers. This group needs to step up, but I don't really see it.
ASU's schedule could lead to a fast start. They will likely be favored in home games against Texas Tech and Cal, and if things break well they could open 4-0. But after that things get real tough, real quick. ASU has five league road games, and four of their last six are away from home. They've gone just 22-29 over the last 10 years outside Tempe, and I don't think they will top two road wins this year.
